This book was compelling and mostly tragic in that the killings described therein seems inevitable - as if the blood feuds were pre-ordained in history and there was nothing that Gjorg could do to avoid his fate. History and location here left inhabitants sealed in the amber of tradition and long-standing family feuds.

5 stars
I have to rate all of Garcia Marquez's novels as five stars because I love the lyrical gorgeous writing. In this novel we see the loneliness of power and also its detachment from reality. You have to be in the right frame of mind to read the book because of the incredibly long winded, rambling and sometimes confusing sentences, however, they always retain a sense of magical realism and delicacy. Definitely a book I could read a few times over.
