I received this for Christmas probably 1990’s -it was a fat paperback-size 4x6 or 5x7
The soldier was fighting during ancient Roman era. He was captured and made a slave. I remember one of the first few chapters he was being marched as a slave through a mountain/cliff area that was very narrow with passage with high sides.
