Karlyne Landrum | 1964 comments I've read either this version of the Christ Child story or another similar one; it's a lovely reminder of what the season should be.

I hadn't read Christmas Under the Snow, but I've read a lot of "prairie winter" stories, and I really enjoyed this one. The thick snow and the wind howling and covering up everything familiar is a scary thought, and one that happened too often for comfort. The unprepared (or the unlucky?) often paid dearly for their homesteads.

Christmas Under the Snow is my favorite story so far. Being buried is a scary thought, but I was more worried for Papa and the horse out in the storm than the family in the cabin.
It's a nice touch that they will let the birds free in the spring if they want to go.

The universal children's hankering after a pet really came through in this; I think one of the reasons I loved Heidi so much was the goats! And it really was sweet that the birds would get to go free (I hate seeing birds in cages). We live on what I call high prairie and watching our bird life never gets old.
