Sorry for not making any new debates lately! Things have been crazy, but tell me what you think!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think it would be better, with that said I do think it will take a few more generations to learn how to use it properly because right now we seem to abuse/overuse it

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree! But sometimes I can’t help but wish some internet things never existed. I’ve had some troubles with technology, but I’m very happy I got to be on Goodreads and meet other bookworms!

I don't think so. The internet has taught me so many things. I can't physically go to the library right now due to risks of an immune system flare up if I get COVID. I have been homeschooled since I was 6 years old after a brief stint in public school that didn't end well. I've learned most of what I know thanks to the internet. I've spent the majority of my life inside, which means I've spent more time on the internet than I have out in public. The internet has given me a platform where I can blog and share my experiences. The internet gives people like me--and many people of different types--platforms to discuss their experiences. If someone uses the internet correctly, they can find a place where they belong--where they fit in. While I dislike some pockets of the internet, overall, technology is a blessing.

Thanks to technology, the lives of chronically ill and disabled people have gotten better (not that they were ever completely flawed in the first place). Thanks to technology, natural disasters can be predicted, giving a lot of people a chance to evacuate. A lot of types of technology have saved lives, so I think it has made our lives better. Is there room for improvement? Yes, there always is, but right now I think we're doing pretty good.

Kacie I agree. I definitely don't think it would be better if technology never existed. it's definitely a great tool. and like most tools, it can be used for good or bad. so I wish it was used more carefully a lot of the time. but for the most part, technology is amazing and I'm so grateful we have it :D

Ayathma | 607 comments I think technology has to exist cuz without that we can't do anything easily.
That's my thought

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 389 comments I don't think so. While social media has had some negative impacts like bullying, technology has really helped the medical field and technology has made many things more accessible for people with disabilities

Jenny Clark | 280 comments Hmm this is an interesting question. I also come from a unique time period for technology. The year I was born was the year the internet was created, and it really did not take off until I was in middle/high school. It's honestly a mixed bag for me. I do agree that it's great for people with disabilities, allowing those who are limited in how much they can be around other people to connect with people, allowing those with hearing trouble to hear better and vision issues to see better, and medical technology is advancing greatly, allowing diabetics to not have to do finger sticks, and there is even a pump to replace one's heart while waiting for a donner, if the real organ is too damaged to hold out.
However, with this there also comes more scammers. There comes data leaks that affect millions when their credit card or bank info is compromised. There also comes the online bullying, and over use of computers, phones and TVs. There also comes the problem of WHEN the scammers call. (They call right when I usually go to sleep)
It all depends on how it is used I suppose.

I really agreed with Scooodles. Even though technology has helped us in so many ways, I’ve seen terrible things. I think people still need to learn how to use it for…I mean, just not to make terrible things.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Oooooooh I have an idea 💡

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Technology has saved lives and it’s helped people do so many things. It’s helped Disney people make movies which entertain people.
It’s made us realize we have a terrible memory against a gorilla.
But what about the technology in entertainment? Like movies, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Netflix, Prime Video, all these sites. Some of these sites have horrible things.
Some have horrible shows.
But also it’s made our internet thrive with people who want to share with the world. They want to create or show people how to do things. They get together to make series or movies for other peoples entertainment.
But there is a lot of other things. People make horror shows for some people because they like it, but horror games and shows have scared me for a long time.
So what about just the self-entertainment part, has that helped our community?

message 14: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (chronicbibliophile) Agree with audrey. the question depends on what aspect of technology you're focusing on. some is bad, some is good. tech as a whole isn't necessarily bad or good, it's the people behind it and the people using it that MAKE it bad or good. social media, for instance, was created as a way for people to stay in touch and know what they're up to, chat, and make friends on the other side of the globe (just like on gr!). people have now turned social media into a bad thing because they use it to their advantage, as an easy way to bully, rape, or even track ppl down and kill them. (dark but true) technology provides us with thousands of pieces of information right at our fingertips, including shows, movies, and songs; while this may sound like a good thing, this means that even a six-year-old who has a basic understanding of how to use a remote can ruin their innocence by turning on an R-rated movie. some tech, on the other hand, is a very good thing. technology has brought us so many new discoveries. it took us to space, gave us a better way to find cures for disease such as cancer or autoimmune diseases, and has made life much easier. tech has advanced places like China very quickly, and without some of the technology we have we may not know even half of what is in the basic science textbook, just because so much of it came from space launches like Hubble. so all this is very off-topic, but it just goes to say it matters what kind of tech. in general, I say it would not be better. to answer Audrey's question, I don't think self-entertainment tech has helped at all. this includes things like disney+, netflix, movies, and social media. I think they were created to help us, and were created with good intentions. but the people behind all that have made it bad. the people behind all this are coming up with ideas for horror movies, leaving cyberbullying and some minor hacks unchecked, and some youtubers do not watch what they post before it goes out to the world, to the eyes of anyone from 4 to 98. so to answer your question audrey, I'd say that there are some very good aspects of self-entertainment media, and they were definitely created for good intentions, but it has advanced so quickly and so far, and it has become something that is responsible for the suicides and rapings of thousands of teens a year. so no. self-entertainment, in the long run, has not helped.

that was a lot of words... :/ hopefully you found this helpful but I sometimes can't stop typing.... XV

I think you’re very right, Caroline. There are a few things in your comment that may not be appropriate for younger members that may be in this group (r**e and s**c**e in particular), so I'd recommend eliminating it or putting asterisks. There is only one small part I disagree with though. Cures have been found for some cancers, that is true, but as for autoimmune diseases, no cures exist. And cures haven't even been found for all cancers, sadly (hopefully one day). None have been found for autoimmune disease, and autoimmune diseases are seldom researched. The research for autoimmune diseases is also incredibly expensive and isn’t seen as that important (even though autoimmune diseases can turn into cancer [my uncle {by marriage} had an autoimmune disease and then developed colon cancer, which he died from in 2019] and/or kill someone pretty easily if they aren’t managed well). Autoimmune disease research and treatment has gotten better, but researchers are actually nowhere close to a cure for them. My mom has studied autoimmune disease research online for the past decade, attempting to learn as much as she can in order to help me, herself, and my family. The medical community is so ignorant on some issues when it comes to autoimmune diseases, even researchers and doctors. Very few people understand them. Most people didn’t even know what they were until they were discussed during the pandemic. They don’t know how much vaccines and diet affect things, not even most doctors. Autoimmune diseases are chronic things that can’t be easily cured, if ever cured. Having autoimmune disease is both a blessing and a curse anyway. To me, at least. It mainly means that someone’s immune system is hypersensitive and overreacts sometimes. As long as those symptoms don't get out of hand and precautionary measures are taken, it's not that big of a deal. Unless we reach a point where we can actually control the immune system (which we can’t do right now; it’s also highly unlikely), it won’t happen. The only thing out there are treatments. The only thing that can be done is management and attempting to mediate any symptoms by whatever measures (medications, diet, etc.). Other than that though, I agree with your comment wholeheartedly 🙂

You should 😄 I'm used to having debates and discussions. My mother and I have had long discussions like this since I was probably about 5, however they're usually more philosophical than this (human nature, stuff like that).

You won't fully know unless you try 😊 It just takes practice, that's all.
Yay 😄

I don't think it would have. Especially during lockdown, it would have been harder to communicate with others. In the sense of social media, alot of that we would be better without. But technology itself can be a good thing if used correctly (ie work and communication) and not 12 hours of screen time scrolling through tiktok

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

That darn 12 hours screen time used scrolling through TikTok XD

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Idk how people can do it lol my screen time is 1 hour and 34 and I've been awake since 7 and it's now basically half 6

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

A good example of good uses for technology would be my school!

I was homeschooled until 8th, then started at an online school program. Keep in mind, I have always really loved learning and growing up the focus was always learn to learn, compared to most public schools where the focus is to learn to pass.

Because of technology, I get to do all my required school work in less time than I would at a school, as well as in an organized system that is structured to resemble collage. With the extra time I can learn more or relax. Because I already spend 8+ hours straight on my laptop, after school I rarely sit on my phone or any other tech because I'm kinda drained😅 which means my personal screen time is quite low.
