It's a pretty typical, medium sized town, middle class neighborhood. But we aren't super happy here. People seem overly obsessed with keeping up appearances...like they want to seem happy and put together, but I have no idea if they actually are...if that makes sense. We all say hello to each other, but don't know anything about each other beyond jobs, what cars we drive, etc."

We've lived in our current home 9 years. We have the smallest house on the block and are located on a quiet street, not quite a cul de sac, but a "C" shaped street that nobody would drive on unless they lived on the street. We moved here from an even smaller house where we lived for 16 years. The old house was on a busy street and had a busy alley behind the house. We thought we were moving up in the world. And in one sense, we did. My insomnia was very bad in the old house - I realized after I left that it could have been due to all of the activity both in front or back of the house. The new house was so quiet. Not as much crime, not as much police activity. But, we miss our old neighbors. We joke that in our new neighborhood we know "the help" more than we know our actual neighbors. In our old neighborhood, we looked out for each other and knew names of everyone for the entire block. In our new neighborhood, I have only met our immediate next door neighbors briefly and they did not give us the names of everyone in their household. We never see them outside. But I do know the names of their gardener and their maid. :-)

I'm so glad you joined us, Denise! I think it was a great book to discuss. Hopefully we can both figure out what we want to do with our neighborhoods to make them more of a good neighborhood. :-)
