Christopher | 981 comments Hello everyone!

This thread was originally a buddy read for Klara and the Sun that happened in February 2022, but is now an official BotM for May 2022. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts!

Bonnie | 1290 comments I have down February 5 for this, and I got the book today. So I am ready!

If i really like it I may take the opportunity to read Never Let Me Go as well. It is "on the bookshelf" of my IRL group.

Phrynne I will join in too. I am listening to it on audio and am about half way. It is taking ages because I am not totally motivated. Reading it with other people might get me through it!

Christopher | 981 comments How quickly do people tend to try to read a buddy read? Trying to set the right pace.

DivaDiane SM | 3716 comments I’m not likely to read this in a timely fashion. Sorry, about that! So, just read at your own pace!

Christopher | 981 comments I'm 33% through (I started a bit early to get a head start in case my progress is slower after) and just finished Part Two. Here are my thoughts on each of the first two parts:

Is this your first Ishiguro? That quiet, melancholy tone is one of the things I love about his writing. He eases you into almost horrific scenarios by using that quiet, calm voice.

Yes, I think she is maybe not humoring, so much as picking up verbal tendencies. That tends to happen when you are with someone a lot.

We felt the very same way about this book!

E.D. Robson | 262 comments Kandice wrote: We felt the very same way about this book!

I'm very concerned. I'm not used to people agreeing with me.

By the way, I also agree with your comments in message 16. I felt that the book was about a near future earth, and with regard to the male gendering of the sun, senior gods have traditionally been regarded as male, earth goddess aside, so it is understandable that Klara would follow the same assumption, at least initially.

I did like the writing and completely get the enjoyment of the sort of quiet way the story evolves and the fact that Isiguro lets you find your own message.

I just felt like he was shooting at a bunch of different themes without giving any of them enough attention to make me think.

And my rant in the spoiler is highly subjective, don't let it diminish your hapiness with the book

(view spoiler)

Christopher | 981 comments Okay I finished -- I can see the critiques here as valid, but also can relate to the praise -- I rated it 4 stars because I felt engaged by the story and looked forward to reading more of it. The story had a definite vibe that transported me to that world. I also appreciate the various themes it brought up and the elusiveness of it all.

(view spoiler)

Phrynne I managed to finish it too after about a month of picking it up and putting it down again. I was never engaged by the story only faintly irritated the whole time by aspects which the author introduced and never explained.

DivaDiane SM | 3716 comments I have finally started this (yesterday) and am already at 34% (part 2, I think, or maybe early part 3. The table of contents doesn't say anything about "parts" and I have forgotten what I heard).

I'm enjoying it quite a bit (I enjoy AI/Android/Robot stories). The writing is clear and calm, yet engaging.

He has a way of throwing something out of left-field into the mix. I've had to back up a couple of times to make sure I heard it right (I don't usually do that). The thing is, they are bizarre things and yet they get zero explanation: (view spoiler)

DivaDiane SM | 3716 comments Part 3?

So it seems that (view spoiler) That explains a little bit, but not much.

Rachel | 1406 comments I picked this up from the library maybe b/c I had noticed this buddy read?

The first section really had me engrossed- I was interested in her voice and learning.

But… getting to the house and then only interacting with a few people it started to drag for me….

He always does that! He just slides some wonky, or scary piece of info in and you have to rewind, flip back to make sure you actually understood, or if not, that you know what it is you are NOT understanding!

Is this your first Ishiguro?

Lots of stuff never gets fully explained (like the boxes)!! You'll have to infer through context and educated guesses.

Kandice | 271 comments I thought the boxes were to show us that she was an earlier A.I. design. They aren't explained, you're right, but I think Ishiguro wants us to decide why we think he mentions them.

Loretta | 4 comments Kandice wrote: "I thought the boxes were to show us that she was an earlier A.I. design. They aren't explained, you're right, but I think Ishiguro wants us to decide why we think he mentions them."
We get told early on that Klara is an earlier model and that there are more advanced models on the market that came after her, so I don't think the boxes were a necessary reminder. Perhaps they worked better as a reminder of how Klara's interface with reality differed so much from our own...?? Either way, I found them frustrating and confusing.

Rachel | 1406 comments Yeah I was thinking they were to show how differently she sees (for example the way flies see hundreds of little pictures and the brain coheres then into one?) and since Klaus does it consciously (somewhat) it gives her greater insight and let’s her see the multiple emotions that people show?

DivaDiane SM | 3716 comments Well, that’s a little frustrating to know the boxes are never fully explained.

Yes, this is my first Ishiguro!

Phrynne DivaDiane wrote: "Well, that’s a little frustrating to know the boxes are never fully explained.

He is rather a frustrating author Diane:)

DivaDiane SM | 3716 comments I supposed the boxes Klara sees are meant to be reminiscent of pixels?

DivaDiane SM | 3716 comments Part 3 (definitely):

As for whether Klara (or anyone else) worships the sun (The Sun?), I think it’s because the AFs are solar powered and she does not understand that Josie is not. At least, I’m assuming she’s just a regular human child (even if she *is* “lifted”).

I agree. Klara can't comprehend that Josie, even though she is obviously different from Klara and the other AIs, doesn't rely on the sun to live. Although, if you really think about it, we do!

And this is part of what I couldn't really buy into (see my review!!*some spoilers* https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...). I just couldn't believe that an A.I., with superior functioning and knowledge, created (assumingly) without the bane and burden of human ego, would be, well, so dumb...?

message 50: by Aga (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aga | 1090 comments I've finished the book. I liked it very much. I don't think Klara is "dumb" but she obviously lacks data. Nobody treats her like a silly child and she read only some magazines if allowed. So she uses her imagination instead and creates her own mythology. She is also worried about Josie and can't do anything to help her. I've seen many intelligent people doing and believing in crazy things because their loved ones were terminally ill.

Klara (in the first two parts) reminds me of me as an autism spectrum kid trying to figure out how humans works :) After 5 years of studying (and a master's degree) psychology, I think I get it (most of the time), hehe.

I have another problem with the book. I don't like how female characters were portrayed. They seemed irrational, weak, undecided. Klara can't do anything without Paul or Rick helping her.
