Jen K | 3153 comments In this collection of essays, Ann Patchett shares lovely stories about her life. She shares about her family, husband and especially her 3 fathers and their influence on her writing career. She writes about writers who have influenced and guided her, mostly Snoopy, but also lovely pieces on Eudora Welty and her time at Iowa. The best essays were on her beautiful friendships with her childhood friend, college/ writing friends and the friendship she developed when unintentionally quarantined together.

I really enjoyed these snapshots into Patchett's life and some of the behind the scenes of some of her books such as how it came about to have Tom Hanks narrated the audio of The Dutch House. I had read several of her novels but appreciated her more through these personal stories. I loved how she learned to knit by approaching any woman in Ireland, what a fabulous way to travel. I loved hearing about her love for her bookstore and dogs and all the love and generosity in her life. The essays definitely make me want to read more of her writing.

Holly R W | 3137 comments Jen, as it turns out, we both were reading this book at around the same time. I also enjoyed it. It seems that Patchett is someone who could give lessons on how to be a wonderful friend - I was so impressed with her tales about friendship. In time, I would like to read her previous book of essays, 'This is the Story of a Happy Marriage'.

Jen K | 3153 comments Yes, happy coincidence. I would love to be friends with Ann Patchett and am determined to visit her bookstore someday. Her husband sounds amazing and they seem to have a really great relationship. I will have to check out the previous book of essays as well.
