Richard Rennie | 186 comments It’s that time of year again! Bellies get bigger, the outside gets colder, the wallet gets emptier, and our heads get more full with all the reading we do.

What comic/graphic novel brought you the most joy this year? It’s nice to hear what people are reading and it’s a great way of seeing suggestions on what else to read.

In anticipation of invincible tv show releasing on amazon of read the entire run . Including astonishing werewolf man, and science dog. It for sure made me a kirkman fan for life and I bought everything I could find with his name on it afterwords lol. I don’t hold it in the mega upper echelon of comics like some do. But it’s a REALLY well done comic, easy to read, well paced, intriguing plots twists and the best run I read this year!!!

What’s yours?!!?!?!

Still gotta knock out a review of GC omni. But it will be done sometime this month...

Darth Bane | 261 comments I haven't done as much reading this year as I have had in previous years. Its been a tough one and I've been so busy with work and school. I finally read the Sandman, Lucifer, and Hellblazer omnis this year though, and they have been amazing reads. I was surprised that Lucifer was actually my favorite of the three.

Richard Rennie | 186 comments Really?! That excite me, I hold sandman as my all time favorite read. And have the Lucifer omnis but waiting for book of magic 2 omni before I hunker down and read all 4 at once.

Darth Bane | 261 comments I'll be honest, it took me a few times to read the first couple trades of sandman. Once I broke through I really enjoyed it. I never had that feeling with Hellblazer or Lucifer. It just cruised. I also like the art a bit more, which is totally subjective.

I took a look at the books I managed to put in Goodreads and I read (documented) fewer books this year than typical.

Wonder Woman Dead Earth might have been my favorite graphic novel book.

New manga style book I started and enjoyed would have been Solo Leveling (it's Korean, so manhwa). I felt like The Promised Neverland landing a good finish for the manga series and I'm really happy with it.

To go a bit further, my favorite prose book for history was Tom Holland's Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic. Favorite sci-fi would have been Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun (first four volumes).

Favorite fantasy prose book was a tough choice as I read several books I really enjoyed. Though each one has some flaw which would keep it from getting 100% approval from me (Robin Hobb's Fitz and Fool books get 100% approval from my 2019 reads). For 2021, it's either The War for the Rose Throne series (I read all three available books (of four) nearly back to back) or Anthony Ryan's The Pariah.

Book of the New Sun contains some of the best prose I've ever read and I read book 1 last year too! Any other author would have probably penned an extra 100 plus pages to flesh out a lower standard delivery of the same concept. He is so sufficient and succinct. Gaiman was right that he really is the Homer of the 20th century. I think you'll find the Wolfe you are looking for is Gene rather than Tom ;)

Omni, good catch on the author's name! I'll edit to correct it. =)
I read his first four books printed by the Folio Society. Fantastic production though easily the most I spent on any one author last year.

I've gotten more into some of the smaller publishing firms and their special editions this last year. I've been sticking mostly to the lower end cost wise for these. Which includes both Goldsboro books and the Folio Society from England. Grim Oak and Subterranean Press in the United States are at the upper edges of what I'm willing to pay in for special editions and I've been fortunate to get in on a few really nice books.
