1835 seems to be a reasonable choice. He also published the complete collection, rather than the book split into multiple volumes in 1874 so that would also be a choice. I'm setting it to 1835 for now.

No, each group of stories is a single work, regardless of publisher. If a new publisher publishes a new book with the same stories (within a certain margin), it would be combined with the others.
Also, the original publication date is the date the last of the content in that work was published. (Excluding additions like forewords and appendices etc.) So if it only includes content published in 1835 and earlier, it gets 1835 as the work's original pub date.
