Strange that it has no original publishing date. Disappeared in some combine?1835 seems to be a reasonable choice. He also published the complete collection, rather than the book split into multiple volumes in 1874 so that would also be a choice. I'm setting it to 1835 for now.

Or it was never added. Many works have no original publishing date listed.

Unless some of the content was not published until then, that would not be consistent with our policies.

I'm thinking there is no original publish date because although his first "collection" was indeed published in 1835 it only contained 3 fairy tales. So it's tough to decide which publication should be considered the original. I am now thinking your 1874 date would be the best choice since there are many "collections" that were published on various dates. I think the 1874 version is probably the earliest complete collection since he died in 1875 and was incapacitated in 1872. I defer to your judgment and thanks!
So what I'm hearing is that each collection stands on its own as a unique publication. This means the original publication date for my edition should be the same as its published date, in this case, 1982 (see link above).

No, each group of stories is a single work, regardless of publisher. If a new publisher publishes a new book with the same stories (within a certain margin), it would be combined with the others.
Also, the original publication date is the date the last of the content in that work was published. (Excluding additions like forewords and appendices etc.) So if it only includes content published in 1835 and earlier, it gets 1835 as the work's original pub date.
