Love to read large tomes? Join us in a yearly challenge.

Tome Reader Rules:

1. All books must be read in 2022.
2. Each book must consist of over 500 pages.
3. You make and edit your own list.

Is 400 pages a bit low, maybe 450 pages? What do you think?

In another group I belong to, it's 500+, but 400 has been our go-to. I think it works. But I've no problem with 450 either.. (my name should be wishy-washy)

I made up a poll, https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/1...

The poll will end in the 15th of Dec.

Patty Smith (pinkpurlandprose) | 438 comments This is always one I shrink from, especially when feeling the pressure to finish challenges - so what a great challenge! Because it is over 400 pages, I'm going to aim for 10 books.

It's 500 in another group I'm in but we seem to have had 400. Either works, only about a third of my books are over 400. Even fewer over 500.

The Poll is over and the majority of the people voted for 500+ pages. That will be the new standard.

I own this book and mine is only 128 pages.

Patricia | 1136 comments Is there a guideline concerning the 500 pages? Should it be how many pages there are in the hardcover edition? I ask because I just finished a book that was 399 pages in hardback and 416 in paperback. Also, once I noticed someone listed quite a few books for her challenge but they were all in the large print editons (which amused me, but still!)

Since this is a self guided challenge I would say that it is up too your discretion. I personally just take the actual pages from the version that I read, which is usually kindle.

message 17: by Ann (new)

Ann Like Madeline, I use the page count for the edition that I read. I had to lower my “goal” considerably since we're switching from 400 to 500 pages! For this year, that change would have taken me from 29 books down to 4! But I just do it out of curiosity anyway. When I started this a few years ago, I assumed I read a lot more 400 page books than I actually do. Turns out my average book length is probably right around 385.

Another group I'm in does a big book challenge and you have to use the 1st edition hardback so that it's "fair" but personally I've always thought it should be the edition you actually read.
Seemingly my average page count is around 350.

I use the page count for the edition that I actually read. 500+ pages won't impact me very much I don't think...

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 470 comments Can I count a box set or Omnibus as one book?

message 21: by Madeline , Moderator (new)

Madeline | 481 comments Mod
Beth, I personally would not count an omnibus, unless it was all published at one time.

Do you mean each individual book in the set? These are kindle sets purchased as a box published as the “box” that includes all the books.
Example: Kacy Chronicles Boxed Set: The Revelations of Oriceran Kacy Chronicles Boxed Set The Revelations of Oriceran by A.L. Knorr

message 23: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1136 comments I'll probably go ahead & use the hardback edition count even if it's not what I actually read. I've listened to several long audio books this year & have no idea how else I would count them. Plus, as you say, it's for yourself & I'm curious as to how many of a certain length I actually read. I have three books right now that are well over the 500 plus range that I should finish before the new year, so I can start with a clean slate in that area.

Unfortunately, this set would not qualify. I looked at each book and they were all published on different dates.

message 25: by Alix (new)

Alix | 34 comments The initial challenge was for 400 pages, My 419 page book still counts (I'm almost done, too). That being said my other books are over 500 and two are over 600, so that should average out to about 570 pages per book. :)

But it was republished as a box set. I do not understand why box sets can not be used. You can clearly see Good Reads denotes it as one “book”/ image… a separate entity from each individual one with it’s own publication date. Hence it is one large tome that has 4 parts.

But I am not a mod so I bow to your rules.

They were published in separate years.

Look at it this way, Beth. If you read the first book the year it came out, and the second book the following year, and the third book the year after that, and each of those books was 350 pages long, you wouldn't be able to count any of them. That doesn't change just because you read them back to back and they happen to be being marketed together instead of separately. They're still three separate works.

I understand and will follow the rules but then using the argument that my box set was originally published separately then classics like The Pickwick Papers shouldn’t count since segments were published separately, and in papers not bound volumes. Well actually much of the 19th century British literature that we now read as a “book” was published in volumes to increase revenue. So I will not count those either.

Not trying to be difficult, just pointing out how the publishing business alters our perspective.

message 30: by Ann (last edited Jan 15, 2022 03:30PM) (new)

Ann I think you should count it whichever way you want to, Beth. If you’re reading the boxed set straight through as one book, why not? I was under the impression that these challenges were just for fun but perhaps there are cash prizes at the end that I didn’t know about? If that’s the case, then I could understand the need for stringent rules.

Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City would be another example of a book originally published in a newspaper in serial form.

Having looked at this my personal take on it is that with the example of the Kacy Chronicles, they're clearly shown as 4 separate books with individual titles.
Books like The Pickwick Papers show as one individual book and to be the best of my knowledge nowadays can only be purchased as one individual book. You can purchase each of the indvidual Kacy Chronicle books separately.

Omnibus editions have pros and cons - if you count it as 1 big book, then it only counts as 1 book read for any challenges based on number of books read rather than 4 books.

As Madeline said the group is for fun and to enjoy challenges and we want our members to enjoy being here :)

Yes I agree and GR actually has the box set listed as one book…Kacy Chronicles Boxed Set: The Revelations of Oriceran . And my 12+4 has 16 box sets…. Each listed as one “book” and I am reading them each as a long book. Of course since this seems an issue I will only count books not boxes for this challenge.

Final verdict: What we aren't going to do is argue and nitpick. The MODS set a vote, and members said 500 pages. If you do not like that or agree with it, then do not participate.

Also, you do NOT get to change the rules. It is what it is and the MODS stated what they stated.

We are not doing to go back and forth. Participate or don't.
