Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen's Closest Confidant
334 pages
This is a nonfiction book about Queen Victoria and her personal assistant, Abdul Karim.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It had been on my shelf for awhile, and I'm glad this challenge nudged me to read it.
I thought the relationship between Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim was well presented. She was intent on learning about Indian culture and learning to speak Urdu. Karim became her trusted companion, but was he a loyal aide or a self-promoter, intent on getting whatever he could for himself and his family? Racism is overt throughout.
The book provides a lot of detail and tends to drag in spots, but overall I found it an informative read that did a good job of showing the character of both the queen and Abdul. I gave it four stars.
