Arcane, produced by Riot and directed by Pascal Charrue and Arnaud Delord, is based off of the lore of the popular game League of Legends. The story takes over in Piltover, well, both parts of it. The upper and the undercity. Piltover is the city of progress, where new innovations and discoveries are made every single day. However, this is only the upper part of the city, where the wealthy and the powerful live. Zaun, the lower part of the city, is a place of sickness, ruination, and is poverty ridden. The story starts with two League of Legends characters, Vi and Jinx, although as of right now, she is known as Powder. We learn about their upbringings and how they’re thieves who steal from the topsiders to make a profit to live.
There is a lot of conflict, not only in between the two cities, but inside each of them as well. In Zaun, we learn that the city is run by a corrupt leader named Silco who is using shimmer to hold control of the city. Shimmer is a liquid that causes monstrous mutations to people to make them become stronger. In Piltover there is a conflict about the idea of incorporating magic with science and technology.
Throughout the show we’re introduced to a lot more characters, some being directly from the game, others being people who are only known from the lore. The characters all go through intense change and character development compared to when they are first introduced to us. On top of that, there are a lot of intense fight scenes as well.
I genuinely really enjoyed this show. I went very broad with my summary of the show to avoid any spoilers. It was really good. You don’t have to play the game to understand what is going on in the show which I think is great. But, as a player, it’s amazing to be able to recognize some of the characters and learn more about them. The animation overall was really good and smooth, and the music was great. Season 1 has 9 episodes, with each episode being about 40 minutes long. I can’t wait until season 2 comes out. If you play League of Legends, I highly recommend that you watch this show.
