Jet keeps her personal circumstances private, working part time at Smithie’s as a cocktail waitress and being her mother’s caregiver following her stroke. Why do you think it was so important to her to keep all that secret from the people she works with?

[Jo Ann]

I think part of it is that she doesn't feel it's anyone's business and the other part is she doesn't want their pity. Of course, that also means she's not getting the help she needs from those around her.

[Anita]

Jet is a private person and she also has this whole martyr thing going. She has been on her own since she was 14 and it has become a badge of honor to handle everything by herself. What good would it do to share her woes when she carries these burdens alone.

Jet had a strong need to be viewed as independent and self sufficient, like she was trying to prove it to the world but mostly to herself. To open up would make her vulnerable. She’s a complicated character.
