David | 3885 comments Re: Ali Smith. I agree with GY’s assessment that (paraphrasing) one needs to be British to fully appreciate her work.

I’m delighted that she’s a judge for the Goldsmiths this year.

A lot of books were held back, had their pub dates changed late last year, maybe it was one of those?

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments Yes I think it was debated s month to end October. So last year’s Goldsmith and this year’s Booker.

This year's shortlist announcement event has been advertised on Twitter, on 5th October. Isabel Waidner in conversation with M John Harrison, so not a lecture this time. I think I can get to this one.

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments Thanks! Have booked, hoping I can make it

Any predictions from anyone - the Listopia seems to be mostly my suggestions

message 56: by Robert (new)

Robert | 2647 comments I can see treacle Walker on it

message 57: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments If they stick to the rules I can't as it was eligible last year. Although only by a few days (28 October vs 31 October cut off)

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments Still hoping for Maps

message 59: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments Yes that one surely should be there. It's on the list though.

I'm after the usual books you've read but forgot to mention.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments Will let you know in October

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments It would be quite funny if (as is almost a Goldsmith tradition) the shortlist includes books which made the Booker longlist but not shortlist given this year it will be announced with a Booker judge in the audience.

message 62: by David (new)

David | 3885 comments It seems like there's so much variation from year to year about what's considered innovative that it's hard to predict.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments I have booked also. Will any other Mookse members be able to attend (it’s free of charge)

message 64: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments The Goldsmiths was where several of us met in person for the first time I recall.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments Yes I recall meeting you there I think

message 66: by Hugh, Active moderator (new)

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4399 comments Mod
Certainly the first time I met any of you. I have booked a place and will be there unless it is a rail strike day.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments It looks like the 5th is a rail and underground strike day so suspect attendance will be badly impacted.

message 68: by Hugh, Active moderator (new)

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4399 comments Mod
That rules me out

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments And me I suspect - even the trains and tubes that run on strike days very unreliable - and it’s not an easy venue to get to at best of times

Worth keeping an eye out though as I think it’s a partial strike

message 70: by Roman Clodia (new)

Roman Clodia | 675 comments Blast, I wanted to go but Goldsmiths is right across London for me, too hard on a strike day.

message 71: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments Oh dear - that isn't great. Wonder if they'll move it.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments If only we knew someone who was friends with last year’s winner being interviewed who could ask her …. Over to you Paul

message 73: by Paul (last edited Sep 23, 2022 06:12AM) (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments It isn't a tube strike - only a train strike. Whatever those are - apparently odd things that don't go underground, which service the sticks.

Although unfortunately the Goldsmiths is outside of London, which likely explains it's bias as a prize towards non-London voices.

Kristian Svane (krsvane) | 91 comments Is Young Mungo eligible?

message 75: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments I think Stuart may be a UK citizen still so in that case yes.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments I would think zero chance of it being submitted though

message 77: by Kristian (new)

Kristian Svane (krsvane) | 91 comments Why not?

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments I would think the publishers would not be that interested in a relatively small prize like the Goldsmiths for a book this big (suspect they were hoping for Booker) and I also don’t see how it breaks the mould or extends the possibility of the novel form.

But I may well be 100 percent wrong.

What made you think it might be entered and would fit the prize?

message 79: by Kristian (new)

Kristian Svane (krsvane) | 91 comments I'm only hoping as I already have a copy (easy to find)... also thinking it might appeal to Smith.

message 80: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments Ok so sounds as if event is more likely to move online than to be rescheduled.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments That would be great although I had been looking forward to an in person.

message 82: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments I’d prefer rescheduled as it’s usually informal enough for you to be able to chat with people. But I guess they can’t find another date to do it at short notice.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10086 comments Any news on the online event?

message 85: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments Seemingly not

message 86: by David (new)

David | 3885 comments Shortlist coming today? This is quite a week for book prizes.

message 87: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments My one prediction is that I won’t achieve this year what I did last year of 3/6 of the shortlist in the first post on the thread, and one year even 4/6.

Not least as of my two key picks one of the authors subsequently became a judge, and another, my predicted winner, hasn’t been published (and not clear it ever will be).

Paul Stanbridge’s novel and Poguemahome could be contenders though.

Time to catch the train to the venue

message 88: by David (new)

David | 3885 comments I’m rooting for the Fowler.

message 89: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne I've obviously been corrupted by the group, now oddly excited to find out what's on the shortlist!

message 90: by David (new)

David | 3885 comments It’s contagious! 😊

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4399 comments Mod
Still disappointed I won't be able to see the event. There was no way I could have got back from SE London on a rail strike day. Guessing the announcement will be around 8 pm as in previous years.

message 92: by Paul (last edited Oct 05, 2022 11:25AM) (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments I am here but signal isn’t great and I need to nurse the battery for my Uber home

The Goldsmiths judges has just done a bit of Republic of Consciousness trash talking - “they keep shortlisting Isabel but never giving them the prize”

message 93: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13396 comments Listening to M John Harrison talk about what he likes in a novel, I suspect he is #teamtreacle. Perhaps Seven Moons as well. Very much an enemy of causality and orientating the reader.

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4399 comments Mod
Guessing they are running a bit late

message 95: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 237 comments Does the size of the shortlist vary?

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4399 comments Mod
Usually 6 books

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4399 comments Mod
It is much more boring waiting when there is nothing to listen to.
