The narrator says that when he was six years old, before he became a pilot, he saw in a book a picture of a boa constrictor devouring a wild animal. In the same book, the narrator read that boa constrictors must hibernate for six months after swallowing their prey in order to digest it.
so he make it into two picture, drawing one that he explain to child that see it like a hat and the second drawing to adult people.
so, this quotes means even you have a different perspective for others, when we grow up we could talk only about boring, pragmatic topics like politics and neckties, so everyone can understand it.

Yes Eliz this is an interesting quote. But, I think based in quotes that you provided, it mean that we should put our self in other people level to make them understand and still connected with what we say. It's already explain on the begining of this story, when the pilot was child his parents always talk about geology, astronomy, etc while he like to talk about boa constrictor.
That's a good quote, Eliz. a narrator who describes a quote from a picture that is addressed to 2 parties, namely children and adults. That's good I mean.
