Lucy and Sean (especially Sean) set up the ground rules. Lucy was going to continue the investigation with or without Max and Max knew it.Also Max respects Lucy's skills. She wants Lucy to share with her. Max didn't know what she was up against.
Max has fantastic instincts. She could just smell that there were deep reserves within Lucy. Max's nature is always to have to know the why of anyone and anything. If Max had continued to pry, Lucy would have shut her out of the investigation and that wasn't in Max's best interest.Lucy has a deep seated need to be judged on her own, with her past not being a factor on how people view her. She and Sean both don't trust the press, who really does?
Max saw a lot of herself in Lucy and when she began to trust and respect her, she knew she owed it to her not to break that trust. She also liked Lucy and saw that she not only knew what she was doing, she was damned good at it. I saw Max absorbing insights she didn’t have. This was a really relevant moment.
I think at first Max decided to table the investigation into Lucy when Sean made it clear that they wouldn't put up with it. At that time, Max knew she might not be able to solve the case without Lucy's help. I think Max had planned to dig into Lucy's past after the case was solved. By that time she recognized Lucy as a friend and decided it wouldn't be fair to her.
Good point Robin. I'm sure Max would have looked into Lucy and Sean after the case if she hadn't like Lucy. Also, Sean is offering to help her find answers about her mother.
I forgot about Sean's offer to help find information about Max's mother. Even if Max had planned on digging info on Lucy, that would stop her right there.
