Any ideas on how to effectively search within your TBR for tasks where the character has to have a certain name? I tried lists and just googling it, but that hasn't been very helpful.
I started a spreadsheet of my unread books with the 3 main characters names listed because of that very reason. But that doesn't help you. I googled "Characters with the name Jack" and came up with a list right here on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1.... Maybe you'll get lucky if you try something similar.
ETA - I guess you tried googling.

If you know one book that has the name, listed on its main page, perhaps. ;D
Bring up that book. Click on the character's name in the "Characters" link. All books that have that character's name listed will display. Unfortunately they are usually listed by first AND last name so that does little good.
SEE this one though...click on "Rachel" (no last name) in the The Peach Keeper character link and
Ta Dah!
Several other books show up. Are any of them on your TBR?

Suggestion two:
Google "novel with Rachel in the txt" Are any of them on your TBR?
Peggy wrote: "Any ideas on how to effectively search within your TBR for tasks where the character has to have a certain name? I tried lists and just googling it, but that hasn't been very helpful."
Suggestion 3:
Google allows you to specify that your search results must come from a given website. For example, the query [ iraq site:nytimes.com ] will return pages about Iraq but only from nytimes.com. The simpler queries [ iraq nytimes.com ] or [ iraq New York Times ] will usually be just as good, though they might return results from other sites that mention the New York Times. You can also specify a whole class of sites, for example [ iraq site:.gov ] will return results only from a .gov domain and [ iraq site:.iq ] will return results only from Iraqi sites."
So, if for a challenge, let’s say you needed to find the the word Rachel; query Google with “Rachel site:goodreads.com”. The returned results will give links to such books on GoodReads. (AND quotes AND authors, etc.)
Good trick, Almeta! To find the first book sometimes doing a search for the name in your books helps. If the name is in the title or series name it will come up. I found a few Jack books that way.

Thanks ladies! I found a John list but no use for me, and googling John in books gives lots of results but it's also a lot of work going through them all. So I thought maybe there's an easier way to actually search within your own books. I'm going to try some of your suggestions! They are at least a bit more specific than what I was trying to do :)
Can I just say, I love the name of this thread. I scroll through my notifications screen and it just nicely says "General Help". I would love some General Help, just generally. Makes me smile each time.

Hi Janice - I know we can't start badge 2 until badge 1 is complete, but do we have to complete the three books for a site before we move onto the next site? Or did I just make the challenge a lot harder? lol

Jayme wrote: "Hi Janice - I know we can't start badge 2 until badge 1 is complete, but do we have to complete the three books for a site before we move onto the next site? Or did I just make the challenge a lot ..."You just made it harder. :) You may read the books within the badge in any order.
I'm sure this has been answered before, but for tasks where the author has to be from a certain place, is that where they currently live? Where they were born? Either?
Amanda wrote: "I'm sure this has been answered before, but for tasks where the author has to be from a certain place, is that where they currently live? Where they were born? Either?"We've allowed both situations in the past.
Hi, this is probably a silly question but could someone tell me how to add a photo to my comment for my side trip please :-)
My process might be a little longer than others, Stacy. I use https://imgur.com. I save a copy of the photo or a screenshot to my desktop, then upload it to Imgur. I get the html code from them. One thing to be aware of, with Goodreads new regulations on outside links you will have to change the code a bit. there is an href code in front of the img code (just meaning basically that the code starts with those letters) both codes are inside triangle brackets <>. You need to remove the href code so that your image link begins with a triangle bracket and img. Just delete everything before that.
There are a couple of things that have annoyed me for some time, and it's long past time to address them. Please do not ask for rulings on obvious choices. If the task asks for a train on the cover, and there's a train on the cover, it's pointless to ask for a ruling.
Please do not give me a list of books and ask if they fit. Pick one book - one that you think best fits the task and one you want to read for the task and then ask for a ruling if you aren't sure. When you give me a list, you're basically asking me to do your gophering for you. And it's work, and time consuming for me.
Also, make sure you read the rules to see if your question is already answered before asking.
When you say, "in order" does that mean visiting the sites as 1, 2, 3 etc or can we go in any site order we like as long as we finish the four sites and 1 side trip before moving on to the next set of 4.... I hope my question makes sense on your end. I know what I'm trying to ask, but I'm not sure it's conveyed exactly right...
Thanks!
♞ Pat wrote: "When you say, "in order" does that mean visiting the sites as 1, 2, 3 etc or can we go in any site order we like as long as we finish the four sites and 1 side trip before moving on to the next set..."You can choose any four sites for your first badge. They do not need to be the first four sites. Also, you may read the books within the badge in any order. So, you don't need complete site 1, site 2, etc. You just need to choose any four sites (and a side) and finish all the books for those sites before moving on to the sites for badge 2.
Badges must be read in order. No reading books for badge 2+ if you haven't finished badge 1. That's what I mean by "in order". As Kristie said, within the badge, you may read in any order you like. When you report - list them in numerical order. It's easier to check sites off in the tracker if I don't have to bounce back and forth.

Thanks. That is exactly what I was asking! :-)
So I usually read/listen to several books at a time. I have already started the last book of my current badge (which is a paper book) and it is a chunkster (800 pages). Can I start just one audiobook for my next badge? I have a long commute and listen then. I already have library holds waiting to go, but I am in the middle of my paper book.

Janice wrote: "Yes, I do give you a break form the hard work of challenges from time to time. :)"LOL We are addicted to your challenges - we can't handle reading for fun anymore!!!
Isn't all our reading for fun? ;-)Just kidding, I get it. Reading a book without any reason except 'want to' has become such a strange concept over the years. The last weeks of 2021 were like that for me, and I found it stressful!
well and now I have my books all uber-planned so I don't have time for any "fun" books! It would throw everything off! :)
Janice wrote: "Oh! Oh! Trouble in the house. How will the toppler throw you off?"See that's why I had to finish badge 2 before the toppler so I could have open spots :)
I am reposting my request in my thread.I have posted the last two books for my Badge 1 for clearance. I have a few instances where the Mods could not see my posts. I do not know if this is an instance like that and that's why I am posting here. If the books are cleared, could I post my request for Badge 1? Thanks.
Viji, I can see your posts. Janice is away for a few days, but I'm sure she'll check your posts as soon as she's back. Might be in or after the weekend though.
Peggy wrote: "Viji, I can see your posts. Janice is away for a few days, but I'm sure she'll check your posts as soon as she's back. Might be in or after the weekend though."Thanks, Peggy. I am glad that my posts could be seen. It is no problem. I could wait till Janice returns.
Could I post my request for my Badge 1 even though my last two books for Badge 1 has not been cleared by Janice? If not, could I at least start reading for the tasks for Badge 2 as I have completed all the tasks for Badge 1? Thanks.
Kristie wrote: "Viji - We will be taking a look at books soon. Give us just a little time to check them."Thanks, Kristie.
Viji - Looks like Rus was able to check off your last books. Go ahead and put in the request. I'm not sure when the badges will be posted, so don't worry if it doesn't end up on your wall right away. We won't miss it. It might just take a little time.
I’m sorry, but I have an issue of my own making. I know that badge three should be 8 sites plus side trip equaling 27 total books read. In my personal record, I listed nine sites. I only just discovered the issue. The problem is that I have read all of the books except for four out of the nine sites. One of those four is my side trip. So…does one of the remaining partial sites need to go towards badge 4 and I need to redo the two completed tasks?
Example:
Site 32: All read except Souvenir task
Site 8: All read except Souvenir task
Site 26: All read except About Task
Side Trip: All read except About task. I know I have to complete this one for Badge 3.
If I have to reread for one site, I would prefer it to be Site 8. So, so sorry.
Oh no, Sharon! I think you will need to pick 8 sites to report and your side trip, then start from scratch for your next badge. I know you know this, which is why you're asking, but the direct quote from the rules is, in bold: "*** New Ruling**** 12. Order of Books read: Each badge must be complete before you start another badge. You may read each badge's tasks in any order, but you may not read a badge 2, 3, 4, or 5 book until badge 1 is complete. This ruling continues for each badge."
Janice is home now and will be popping in, so she can overrule me if she chooses, but for fairness sake I think we need to keep with the official rules.
Ohhh! I think so. Since you only have 3 sites left with one book each (not including your side trip, of course), I would say just choose any two of those to finish. Make sure to note in your personal thread that you are not finishing site #8 because you completed too many sites on accident. That way whoever is recording it can remove the original books from the reporting spreadsheet.
