This one (#4) gets me every time... the third book had a solid start, but like everyone said, there's not much that needs discussing, after they reach Candyland around the middle...

With this one (view spoiler)[I've always felt like this was the world I'd most likely end up in (even tho boys rarely make it to the market because "boys will be boys")... big reader, logical, problem solving, etc etc etc... and I really felt for Lundy and the bird-girl... and there's no disconnect point... I dunno... I just feel like this is the best entry in the series, of the 5 I've read... (hide spoiler)]

After reading chapter 2 of In an Absent Dream (view spoiler)[I don't understand why kids don't like Lundy just because her father is a principal. It has been awhile but the 6 year olds I have been around just seem like they want friends and aren't so cruel these days. I could be wrong as I am not around that many young kids.

Also it really makes sense that Lundy would go to a logical world as she likes rules so much. (hide spoiler)]

I am still trying to figure out which world I we fit in best. This one so far is too rigid and has too many rules. When I was younger I might have fit in better with Candyland. (hide spoiler)]

people used to make up tons of them... and I find them all ridiculous/hilarious... it's such an easy format to invent for... and not wrong... I watched tons of House Hunters on work breaks, over the past decade... these days, not so much...

I may not have steady internet access for a few days so I am going to try and finish this book today. I am really enjoying the story so far.

After finishing part 2: (view spoiler)[ This world with the fair value trade system seems very unforgiving and harsh. It's too bad that friendship can not count for fair value and that Lundy can't give Moon things just because they are friends.

I wish we learned more about Mockery. We seem to get the gist of what happened during part 2 which was nice because I felt like I missed something big as we finished part 1. (hide spoiler)]

This book was much more emotional for me than any of the others and I agree, Iain, that it is the best in the series so far.

End of story: (view spoiler)[I hate that the relationship between Moon and Lundy ended the way it did. I would have like to see Lundy continue to be a good sister and a good friend to Moon but that is just not a reality. I can totally understand how hard it would be to be torn between the two worlds that are very different. (hide spoiler)]

This one hit me harder, emotionally, on this readthrough, than any previous one... not sure why, but those last 2 chapters were rough... we knew it had to happen, tho... we read the first book :(

(view spoiler)[ I do relate a lot to the young Lundy in the first half. More engaged with books than with other people. I had a few friends growing up, but I mostly kept to myself. The Goblin Market might have been something that appealed to me when I was younger, I thrived on structure and rules.. it does seem pretty harsh though. Now, I'm not so sure what world I would associate with that we've seen so far. (hide spoiler)]

Oof, Lundy being transformed into a bird if Moon stays friends with her without resentment doesn’t seem like fair value to me at all. That hurts my heart..
And that line about if it was Moon’s story the ending would be happier reminds me we kinda already know what happened to Lundy and it just seems so unfair!

How big is the Goblin Market do you think? Is it just an isolated market in a fantasy realm? Is it a whole world? Does it exist in physical space on a planet? (hide spoiler)]

This is one of those books where I want to try to get the attention of the main character to tell her to STOP lol. The archivist is doing her best to try to get you to do something else, don’t you think there’s a reason for that!?
Its a cautionary tale about not choosing, can’t have your cake and eat it too kind of story. And for a world obsessed with fairness (is fair value even the same thing as fairness) it just seems cruel. I guess Lundy’s father was trying to warn her about that the whole time.

Also.. Lundy’s nephew went to the GM.. do we get any info about that in earlier books? I forget. (hide spoiler)]

Has anyone read Over the Woodward Wall? I didn't realize it was written by Seanan McGuire and it sounds like it is similar to the Wayward Children series but for a younger audience.

Isn't that the fictional book series from Middlegame?... I'd heard there were plans to publish it... there are rhymes and things in the books that hide the secrets of magic, related to the Middlegame series...

If I remember correctly, Middlegame plays on the idea of shared consciousness shaping reality?... so Wizard of Oz and stuff were written to hold reality together, after Dr. Frankenstein type mad scientists almost destroyed the world in the late 1800s?... if you haven't read it, you should...

Middlegame came out a few years ago... there's a sequel planned for the distant future... in the meantime, there's a loosely connected side book coming out this summer: Seasonal Fears

Middlegame has a pretty complicated timeline... for timey-wimey reasons that aren't fully explained until almost the end of the book...

Starting a little early for this one :)

I find myself wondering as I start to read this.. The prologue mentions the parents of these wayward children, and I remember most of these kids do have parents or families. But what about the kids that don’t? Are they more likely not to come back because they don’t have anything tying them to the world where they were born?

And we have Jack in Jill’s body. To suddenly realize youre not in your own body must be shocking. And correct me if I’m wrong, I thought Jill was dead at the end of Book 1? Well it is the Moors so I guess resurrections are expected.. And yep, that is exactly what Jack did lol

I really appreciate Jack’s way with words. It’s funny cuz as a scientist with a bunch of scientist co-workers and friends, we really are not the eloquent/wordy type. Of course we don’t resurrect dead people with lighting either so…
But she can deliver a whole speech while she’s losing her mind which is quite impressive

Also, I really like how Cora is just not okay with all these new happenings.. I guess being a mermaid is one thing, but when your friend’s room is suddenly attacked with lightning and the emergence of a clearly resurrected person is another. Everybody has their limits of weird. *shrugs* (hide spoiler)]
