If you have any ideas for fun events I could host next year let me know here!
Check out what's already planned to be going down in 2022: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

From what's already planned, there really isn't much new stuff. I thought we could do the Best Books of the previous year readathon like we did at the start of this year; it was a great way to start off the year.

The Black History Month event will either be like a readathon or a checklist sort of challenge. If anyone has any ideas about the best way to run that event I'd love to hear it!

Movie March is an idea I recently came up with. It'll be like a readathon where you can read the book and then watch the movie or tv show adaptation and compare the two. Or really you could just watch the movie/tv show adaptation😂 It can be a bit of a breather from reading! Considering a lot of MG books are being picked up to become movies or tv shows in the past few years, it's a really fitting event!

Mystery May is what I'm really excited for. It'll be like the Steampunk September event we hosted this year, so a book list of the best mystery reads and then we read them in our classic readathon style.

Guys, I really love hosting event ideas that you all suggest because you always manage to think of things I never could've, so if you have ideas even for events we've never hosted before or games or exciting new stuff then please do tell me and we can find a way to add it to our next year's schedule!

AurorainBookland | 748 comments Fable February a Fairy Tale readathon. There are a lot of Fairy Tale retellings or books inspired by Fairy Tales and most are about the power of true love so it fits in with Valentine's day.

Awesome idea Aurora! We're actually doing that literally next month in December! Although it does fit well with February, I don't think enough time is between December and February to warrant us doing the same themed readathon again.

@Audrey 😱I love it! What a fantastic idea! That’s a really great way to broaden everyone’s reading horizon.
What about Genre June instead? I love that we’re trying to make everything an alliterative title😂 I think it could also be on any other month and I’ll just call it the Genre Challenge. But June is a good time for it because it’s the summer holidays so most people are free.

What do you think of June for it? April, July and September are also free.

message 11: by AurorainBookland (new)

AurorainBookland | 748 comments genre June has a nice ring to it

finn (frogadventures) | 105 comments I think it would be really cool to do some sort of challenge/readathon focusing on books with disability rep if anyone would be down for that?

Own voices readathon. A lot of times its a miss if not written by a person with that disability.

That’s an awesome idea Grace! Disability representation has been growing in mg books and there are so many new books that I want to read that show more inclusivity like that!

Maybe July would be a good month to do it because that’s Disability Pride Month and July 26 is Disability Independence Day. What do you think?

I want to make sure I’m respectful with the way I discuss this topic and I’d love it to be centred around inclusivity and awareness so if people who know more on the topic or are disabled themselves want to give opinions on this I’d love that!

Cool! Own voices disability readathon would be my strong suggestion. I read a book that wasnt own voices and the main character called herself cripled. Not good representation or role model for kids/ anyone reading that book.

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 4309 comments Mod
@AurorainBookland In order to be inclusive I wouldn’t limit it to own voices. Good representation can come from even those who haven’t personally experienced such situations and one badly representative book doesn’t accurately reflect how all books represent disabilities.

Of course, it’s just an idea for now, so we’ll see what others think too!

Gotcha. The sadest thing was the book was written by a mother whos kid had what the main character had. There was no character development where the MC stopped using depressing language to refer to herself. I just feel like this topic is best written about from people who actually have it.

If it does happen I can give you a list of books I find out about. Fiction and I think the non fiction book I have is MG.

message 18: by finn (new)

finn (frogadventures) | 105 comments I myself am not disabled and I’m not super informed about this topic, so I can’t really offer any advice on how to approach this readathon.

I do think July would be a great time for it, especially since it’s in the summer and people have a lot more free time to participate

I like the idea of developing a list to choose from. Everybody can add titles of books that they've read or heard of that fit.

message 25: by Kadi, Creator (new)

@Lynn it's certainly more fun that way! You get to read more of a variety and if you don't manage to get your hands on a specific book you can choose another from the list. It's a structure that I think suits everyone.

It also gives us somewhere to look. For example, if we do own voices, I only know about a limited number of books, but if everybody adds to a central list, we get more options to choose from.

message 28: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 461 comments You can create an Own Voices bookshelf for the group, though it's possible only mods can add to it.

That's actually an interesting idea Audrey. Can you try adding a book to our bookshelf? I have no idea if group members can do that or only mods🤔

@Eden yes! A new year, a brand new bookshelf, and so many more exciting events! 2022 on this group is one of the only things I’m looking forward to next year, otherwise I’d much rather stay here in 2021😂

message 32: by Abigael (new)

Abigael | 416 comments Personally, I'm only interested in reading books about a disabled protagonist from a disabled person's perspective. If there are disabled side characters from an abled perspective, there needs to be clear evidence of LOTS AND LOTS of research (references section at the back is my standard). There has been some controversy over whether it's okay for non-disabled people to create content (books, movies, etc.) and the people who get *hurt the most by these works that are non-Own Voices is the *disabled community. Opportunities that should have gone to disabled people were given to abled people at huge loss to the disabled people and misinformation has been spread all across the disabled and abled spheres. "Nothing about us without us" is key and I will not participate in anything that is not Own Voices. After disabled people have been given sufficient opportunity to tell their own stories, then others can contribute other stories, but it's too soon in the next couple of years.

message 33: by Abigael (new)

Abigael | 416 comments I'm assuming these two are fixed events in the calendar, but I enjoyed Book Takeover Month (also known as August, when we worked as a team and I ate more books in one month than I think I've read in a month in my entire Book Dragon life) and also Pumpkin Season in October. I am 93% sure I can pledge now to participate when those months come.

Opinion: I like someone else's idea of having a Black Authors month! That is something I would want to do whether others participate or not. February is Black History Month and June 19 is Juneteenth, so if this isn't the official theme for one of those months, I won't be participating here during that time.

Suggestion: Indigenous Authors month, which would be similar to Black Authors month. In my country, September 30th is Indigenous Day, so I want to mark that occasion with at least one suitable book. Since we're spread across the globe, my suggestion is to read Indigenous authors from Canada, U.S., Australia, and any other regions where similar colonialism has happened. I don't know which month would be best for this theme, though.

Thank you for your work, Kadi!

@Abigael it's so interesting seeing everyone's opinion on this. I was thinking for the Disability Pride Readathon that I could sort out the book list into own voices and not own voices books so we could be inclusive of everyone's recommendations.
As it is right now I'm not sure if we'll be having that readathon. I'm not sure if I'll be free enough in June to set it up or in July to host it. I might be but I don't want to overcommit so for now the idea is just in development!

There's no need to commit so far in advance for the August MG Reading Challenge and October Readathon but I do love to see the enthusiasm😊 They're my 2 fave (and most popular) events on the group! Glad to see you're interested in taking part it in again next year and they're definitely happening again with hopefully an upgrade or a twist to them, we shall see...

The indigenous authors readathon is a great idea! Personally I don't know how many books there are out there within that category, so I'll look into it and see.
And yes! The Black History Month readathon idea was mine! I've paid homage to it before in I think one of the TBR challenges but it definitely deserves so much more attention so I'm excited for that one!

message 35: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (justadream_away) | 124 comments I would absolutely love if we had a readathon for Disability Pride Month! (or any month, really, but I think July would be good for it) I do highly recommend making it Own Voices because disabled authors are severely underrepresented in publishing and, unfortunately, most books about disabled characters by non-disabled authors are harmful and ableist. The term Own Voices actually originated in the Disabled community as well. It was coined by Autistic author Corinne Duyvis.

I'm multiply Disabled, Autistic, and a full-time wheelchair-user. I can help with a book list for the readathon if you'd like, and possibly co-host the readathon as well, although you'd have to ask me closer to the time because I can't commit to that this far in advance.

I also recommend for anyone interested checking out disabilityinkidlit.com as a resource for Own Voices reviews of MG and YA books. They've been on an indefinite hiatus for a couple years, but their site is still a valuable resource, and they do review books by both OV authors and non-OV authors.

I'd also love an Indigenous authors readathon! I'm Cheroenhaka (Nottoway), and I could definitely recommend some books and authors for that one as well.

I don't really have any new ideas for events, but I loved the August MG Challenge and both the graphic novel and fairy tale readthons from this year and would definitely be interested in participating in those again! I would also love to join in the Black Authors readathon!

Idea 2 diffrent readathons with the same theme at the same time. So 1 more general any book that has a disabled character Main or just supporting cast and one own voices disability readathon I'm open to running the own voices version where you have a list of MG books suggested to pick from, I cant make a random picker though.
