I just saw the hardcover version of that series for $1 each at our local used bookstore!

I am very much into YA fantasy and dystopian now. Never thought I'd be here, as I was always a historical fiction kind of girl, but I did enough pre-reading for my kids to introduce me to some great fantasy, which led to dystopian novels. I do enjoy other genres, but that is where I am in this season.

Fantasy and contemporary fiction :)

Siobhan, it's funny that you ONLY like Star Wars sci-fi--I cannot stand them!😅 The movies are ok, but I can't do the books. Too much alien description and weird stuff.🙈
What are your favorite classics?? My favorite is Pride and Prejudice, but I recently finished The Count of Monte Cristo and really enjoyed it. I also just started Persuasion, and so far, it seems like I will enjoy it.

I also love reading non-fiction history books. Now that my brain has been feeling better and I managed to get out of the fog it was in with depression and other mental health issues, I find that my love for history has returned. So, I've been picking up more and more non-fiction history these days.
@Tiffany, I am so glad to hear you are improving, and at the same time, sad that you were struggling. I believe someone in my family struggles with mental health issues, and it is so hard and so, so real.
I have been so glad to interact with you lately regarding the classics! You have such a rich knowledge of them, and you were invaluable to my getting through The Count of Monte Cristo without losing hope!!

Classics are some of my favourite books to read. They are wonderful and the more I read them, the more insight I get from them and the century they were written in. It's very interesting to read the old medieval literature by European authors. Mostly because you see a lot more of how religion played such an important role in their world... particularly the western Church (the Roman Catholic Church). Regretfully, I haven't read much literature from eastern Europe where the writers would have been active in the Eastern Orthodox Church- but I've read a lot of nonfiction many years ago about specific countries and the empires within them. The Byzantine Empire most notable out of them.
Also, I am very glad that you got through such a monster such as The Count of Monte Cristo! If you can tackle such a beast like that then I think you'd be ready to read War and Peace soon, lol. Or another giant classic, anyway. :P
Romance and crime, oh and Christian fiction obv <3
Mystery/suspense, classics, *some* historical fiction (though it really depends on the author). Romance bores me, not gonna lie lol

Ahh, I can relate! I need romance to be the subgenre and not the main one, you know? Like fantasy + romance is good and suspense + romance is good, but just plain romance is often bleh.

Yeah I totally agree! Like...some romance thrown into a suspenseful and/or meaningful plot is fine, but I definitely don't read romance books just for fun or anything. Most of them are cliche and honestly just overrated haha

I used to read whatever I could buy or borrow. Since joining GR I have read mysteries mostly, classic mysteries but also a lot of cozies. Now I'm into nonfiction, and this latter development has exploded in my mind, making reading the genre a culmination of everything that I wanted to read from my childhood.

That is fantastic! The nonfiction genre is really limitless.

Thank you! :)

But I also absolutely LOVE YA dystopian/fantasy/sci-fi just as much. I know that at age 48 I "should read stuff in my own age group", but I don't really care all that much about other people's opinions lol

You are right to think so. If you derive something of value from reading something, it is rational to keep reading it.

I was so against Harry Potter and other fantasy books until I finally gave in and read the first book...which lead to me reading the entire series (and nothing but that series) for two years straight. It opened my eyes to so many things. I don't agree with the author's feelings on certain controversial subjects, but I will always be thankful for all the heart and soul she put into that series and how it's shaped the book world and brought so many people back to the joys of reading.

I am a big fan of Harry Potter. My 3 big artistic preferences in life are 1) One Piece(with the Luffy character), 2)Harry Potter and 3) The Beatles.

Relaxing is the product of any WW2 PTO history. Oh, World War Two, Pacific Theater of Operations. Different from Europe, Mediterranean or CBI. Sigh, CBI is China, Burma, India. My bad.
Long reads LOTR.
Short reads any Military history by Osprey books between 1500 and 1913.
Spend too much time prepping for my current D&D campaign games each week. Maybe I would have been a Bard if born much earlier? The words of songs are primary for my enjoyment. Cannot play a lick or sing well.
Preteen - any Science Fiction or Fantasy by Andre Norton or her other authorial names she hid behind. Yea Library!
(All clean of course)"
Ooooh! Agreed!
