Hello, All! Got a quirky Sci-fi/Sports novel I'm trying to come up with a query letter for. This is what i have so far, and I want my pitch to be compelling. Any constructive critique would be appreciated. thanks in advance!
Ahmed Dean is a leader of a small army of freedom fighters sent from Earth to liberate Mars from a tyrannical rule. The enemy is always well prepared for Ahmed’s army, and his troops take heavy losses in every battle. The grind of surviving a losing war on a foreign planet with a harsh climate, hazardous sandstorms and giant man-eating wurms makes it hard for him to rest, and he frequently blacks out from sleep deprivation. One final, desperate raid on a crucial military post is his last hope of turning the tide of the war, and Ahmed cannot afford to fail.
Ahmed Dean is a star point guard for a lowly basketball team in the midst of one of their worst seasons. He came to this team to change its losing attitude and habits for the better, but inept and selfish play from his teammates and clashes with coaches is wearing on him. He often wakes up not knowing where he is, what he is doing or even what day it is. His confusion alienates him from his friends, fans and girlfriend. A season-defining game against his defending champion former team is right around the corner, and Ahmed cannot afford to fail.
One of these worlds is real. The other one is all in Ahmed’s mind.
And Ahmed needs to figure out which is which before he takes one loss too many, and turning his momentum around becomes impossible.
WAR/GAME is a 52,000 word sci-fi & sports story. I was looking for Literary Agents in the market for unique, out-of-the-box Science Fiction stories featuring BIPOC, and a search led me to your website. I am writing in hopes that you will find my manuscript interesting.
I am an African-American writer, and I have already had four novels published, my most successful one being the sci-fi/horror novel “Godmode” (Necro Publications) I wrote and illustrated a webcomic for three years (https://www.facebook.com/theseizurewe...), and I was an entertainment journalist for the Michigan Daily Newspaper. I studied creative writing under the tutelage of Jonis Agee (Strange Angels, South of Resurrection) and Tish O’Dowd (Floaters).
