SOLVED. Sci Fi/ Fantasy read late 70s, maybe early 80s- a desert is being flooded but there is a civilization under the desert of non-human intelligent beings. [s]

If I remember correctly, it's the Sahara. The underground civilization has big mushrooms. I was only a child when I read this, but it has stuck with me some 40 odd years. The main character realizes when the new water level drops significantly overnight, the underground society is gone
