30.1 - Aprilleigh’s Task: The Computer Curse

No books with the main page genre children or kids may be used. You can use one book with a main page genre of graphic novel, sequential art, comics, etc.
Each book should be at least 250 pages.

In 1871, Prussian Field Marshall Helmuth von Moltke wrote an essay on military strategy that said “No plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the main enemy forces,” or, “No plan survives first contact with the enemy.”

I do a battle plan for every SRC season that theoretically has me completing the challenge about a month or so before it ends (depending on the number of tasks, of course). They never survive contact with the enemy of daily life and responsibilities. Usually I finish within days of the early-finish cutoff, or I don’t finish at all. This time, even though life interfered in a big way, it was beneficial to my reading plan instead of gumming up the works.

One memorable distraction was a last-minute trip to NYC to help my sister move. By last-minute I mean I messaged her at 10pm when I realized she was overwhelmed and was on the road with a car full of boxes, packing supplies, and my teenaged son the following afternoon. Including driving time, we were gone for four days. Her adoptive father, who is a well-known cartoonist, lives with her. I packed up his papers, including original artwork, sketches, notes, and fan mail. It gave me a unique perspective on his work (I was a fan long before I knew his daughter was my sister).

My unusually early finish despite that trip is almost entirely due to my MacBook Pro blowing up on me shortly after I returned home. I do everything on my laptop, which became very apparent when I was without it for nearly a month. In the end, they had to replace the logic board three times before they isolated the problem (a bad cooling fan), and had to replace a year-old battery because the initial problem destroyed that, too. I ended up with nothing to distract me other than my books, although posting the completed tasks would have to wait because there was no way I was trying to do that on my phone! I may never catch up on writing reviews. My apologies for the flood I posted the week I finally got the computer back.

Book 1: In honor of my lovely sister, read a book that is set at least 80% in NYC (includes The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island), AND with a ‘4’ in either the number of pages or the series number (series number must appear in grey-scale on the Goodreads record and must be a whole number - no 4.5).

Examples:
American Psycho (384 pages)
Literally Murder (#4 in the Black Cat Bookshop Mystery series)

Book 2: To commemorate the second event, read a book with either LOGIC or BOARD intact in the title (subtitles are excluded), AND with a ‘3’ in either the number of pages or the series number (series number must appear in grey-scale on the Goodreads record and must be a whole number - no 3.5).

Examples:
Logicomix: An Epic Search for Truth (352 pages)
Board Stiff (#38 in the Xanth series)

Margie | 271 comments Hi, can I check on this please for book 1?

I want to read NYPD Red, which is the kindle version.

To count the pages, I'd have to use the top MMPB Φόνοι στο Μανχάταν, which is a Greek version. As it has 384 pages, it meets the task.

Am I doing this right!!?? :)

As long as it's set at least 80% in NYC (I haven't read it and can't verify that) it will work, and you're doing it right as far as page count is concerned. Enjoy!

Thanks you! I'll have to read it to check that it's 80% NY, so we'll see!! :)

I might not have time to read this in the 2 weeks remaining, but would Logical Family: A Memoir work for option 2?
My library has an e-copy I could borrow & the paperback is listed as 319 pages

That works. In fact, I think someone else already used that book for this.
