Dan | 1573 comments So, how about the Weird month of December? So many holidays, too many relatives to visit. What short work, more than 40 pages, less than 120, should we read this month? I'm requesting nominations of Weird Fiction novellas, or short novels. That gives us time to do our holiday shopping and read the selected book! Nominations of up to two books in by November 15 please.

Will give it some though, heading towards a RE Howard as I said in the wrong section as an obvious choice. Also would Providence or Neonomicon be considered by Alan Moore . They are both graphic novels as you would expect by Alan but still they are exceptional pieces?

Dan | 1573 comments Hi Douglas. We have never done a graphic novel here, but I see no reason to fail to consider reading one unless it's not in the Weird genre. I checked, and the works you mention, all part of a series, not entire at that, though which one ought to be read first was not the least bit clear, are absolutely in the Weird genre, and look very interesting indeed. I'd probably vote for one if it were a poll choice and the cost were not excessively prohibitive.

They recently released the complete Providence for £18 and Neonomicon is a sep stand alone that fits in and explains a lot.

But I should warn, a knowledge of HPs work is very handy as their is a lot of clues relating to his original stories.

Dan | 1573 comments Providence Compendium runs mid-twenties of dollars here and no Kindle version is available. You can nominate it if you like, but those factors may mitigate against its chances of success. I could be wrong though and it wouldn't be the first time, fourth maybe. I've lived a long life.

I like Alan Moore's work, incidentally, though I've only read three pieces of it. His Watchmen, and some of the sequels, of course. Some of his Swamp Thing comics when those were being published. And he wrote a non-fiction book on how to write comics. All three were high quality.

Damn, I will maybe rethink, not sure why on a world wide platform every country is so different, It is only a book after all.

I do have a lot of Alan Moore but these two series are his nod to Lovecraft and therefore most relevant.

Dan | 1573 comments Good to know. Walmart.com is the cheapest I could find for paper copy, my definite preference for graphic novels. They sell the paperback version for $23.51 which includes free shipping but not sales tax, which varies by state. Mine is 7%, ugghh. Still, I'd buy it if the book is nominated and wins the poll. I have high regard for Alan Moore's writing.

Dan | 1573 comments Providence Compendium it is then. I couldn't think of a different book I wanted to vote for more and therefore didn't nominate one. Others?

Those wanting to participate might therefore want to locate a physical copy of this graphic novel. I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of looking at comics or graphic novels on Kindle. It was published this year, so less expensive used copies (to the best of my knowledge) aren't available yet. I located and purchased my physical copy this morning on Amazon for $24.09, which included tax and shipping. It's arriving the day after tomorrow, November 18. Wow, that's fast!

We will begin it in two weeks. I'm excited. It's the first graphic novel I have ever seen selected as a group read in any group I'm a member of.

Hi Dan

It is an interesting read that only completely unfolds and makes sense at the end :)

Surprised this was the only choice though, I would have nominated a few others if required. Sure I have a few more weird in my list 500+ wanna reads :)

Looking forward to this, will probably read mine again and Neonomicon to go along with it.

Next time will add some Clark Ashton Smith.
