ok so basically each team gets 4 tries to get a touchdown
the team who "gets the ball" is offense, they're trying to get a touchdown. defense are trying to stop them from scoring and to use up offense's 4 tries.

if offense get's a touchdown before using all their 4 tries, they switch

the 4 tries are called "downs" you've probably heard someone use a term like "3rd down"
there's 1st down (1st try), 2nd down (2nd try), etc

but each down is 10 yards or more, if the offense gets less then 10 yards then it doesn't count as one of their attempts and they can go again

sometimes, usually if they only have 1 try left, offense will try to do a field-goal instead
thats where the kicker will try to kick the ball in-between the field posts, the two yellow stick things at the end of each field

also touchdown is 6 points (but after the kicker has a chance to kick the ball in-between the field posts and get an extra point)

and a field goal is 3 points
