The Russian bestseller about love and second chances, brimming with warmth and humour

In the tiny village of Maran nestled high in the Armenian mountains, a place where dreams, curses and miracles are taken very seriously, a close-knit community bickers, gossips and laughs, untouched by the passage of time. A lifelong resident, Anatolia is happily set in her ways. Until, that is, she wakes up one day utterly convinced that she is dying. She lies down on her bed and prepares to meet her maker, but just when she thinks everything is ready, she is interrupted by a surprise visit from a neighbour with an unexpected proposal.

So begins a tale of unforeseen twists and unlikely romance that will turn Maran on its head and breathe a new lease of life into a forgotten village. Narine Abgaryan's enchanting fable is a heart-warming tale of community, courage, and the irresistible joy of everyday friendship.

Gail (gailifer) | 269 comments Three Apples that Fell from the Sky is a wonderful small novel about a small town in the hill country of Armenia. The people in the town are the last of their lines as there are no young people in town. We discover that there are no young people because half the town was swept away in a landslide, they have gone off to be killed in the wars, there was a two year famine, the overthrow of the tsar, drought, a small pox epidemic and simply because there are no jobs in the little town for the young. The novel is full of tragedy but the tone and the themes are not tragic. What has happened was meant to happen and what will happen could bring joy. The characters are all wonderful even if grumpy, and some of them are even delightful though dead. This is a story about forgiveness, loyalty, belief and rebirth and it is just simply a delight from beginning to end.
Thank you Celia for recommending.
