I realize that it will be only November by the time your nomination might become a group read, but this time around please nominate your favorite book of 2021 so far. It doesn't have to have been published in 2021, just a mystery/crime/thriller/true crime/etc. book that you loved enough over the year to want to share.

I'll nominate Laura by Vera Caspary. Actually, my favorite so far has been The Black Spectacles apa The Problem of the Green Capsule by John Dickson Carr, but it's out of print, so Laura will have to stand in.

excellent choice, Aditya. I'd reread that book in a heartbeat.

Nike | 70 comments Then I'll recommend/nominate Little Black Lies by Sharon J. Bolton that is one of the best crime stories I've ever read. And it takes place in an exotic part of the world, The Falkland Islands.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I can't remember if we second nominations here or not, but I'll second Laura. I've been wanting to get to that one.

not necessary, but I liked that book enough to put it on my real-world book group's lineup for this year. So much better than the film!

Oh, hey, finally something we disagree about. Not that I think the film is better, just somewhat different. I only read Laura a few years ago after seeing the movie multiple times since I was a teen. I enjoyed it, but have to admit my nostalgia sees the movie as a near perfect early film noir.

Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed the movie. I liked the book more though, with the switching points of view and the interior focus.

I can understand that. One thing about the movie that impressed me more after reading the book was how they caught the Lydecker tone spot on. That and the casting seemed impeccable in retrospect.

Oh yes! Clifton Webb as Lydecker was a perfect choice, but whoever did the screenplay completely changed his appearance from the novel. There actually was only one thing about this novel that I didn't care for, but it's a big thing: at one point one of the characters pretty much gives the show away. I won't elaborate in case this novel gets chosen.

Sorry for the delay, everyone -- we have serious remodel projects happening in our home at the moment so it's a little cuckoo here.

Angelina | 149 comments I have just read two, both completely different and both great if you don’t know the authors already.
The whisperer by Karin Fossum and Ann Cleeves Vera Stanhope series with The Darkest Evening. If I could only pick one it would be the whisperer as gets you thinking!
