SOLVED. O Henry? story with climax line line "Is good to know how to read". [s]

I read this in the 1980s in Middle School.
It was a story about a (Swedish) general store owner in the old West who had to have his goods delivered by roughneck haulers who make fun of him because he doesn't speak English well.
The roughneck haulers skim some of his goods they deliver to him.
The climax of the story is when one roughneck hauler is found dead on his route, frozen to death in the cold.
The store owner had ordered a cask of rubbing alcohol.
The last line of the story is the store owner saying "Is good to know how to read."

I understand I may be way off in this summary and hope someone knows the story I am trying to describe.
