Of course I figure out what the book was shortly after posting. "A Call to Arms" by Alan Dean Foster https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...So I guess this is Solved! Good work everyone!
Humanity on Earth is visited by a group of aliens who seek to enlist their aid in fighting off a powerful enemy. The enemy species is a religious group that believe their cause to be divine. They also have mind-control powers and have been defeating the allied species and forcing them to switch sides. So the alien allies are fighting their former compatriots etc.
The allies aliens are shocked to learn that humans live on a dangerous world and are quite well adapted to war, something all the aliens abhor and only engage in when all other possible avenues have been exhausted.
Additionally, the bad guy cult aliens try to mind-control a human captive and instead are driven insane by the chaos inside a human brain.
I vaguely recall that the alien allies contain bird-people, something like dog people (who love running and jumping around), and maybe a rock-like species.
I believe this book was for teenagers.
