Yeah I got that impression too as opposed to the first book. I also feel Bell is better fleshed out in this second book.

I was eye reading, but finally got the audio. Is the narrator different from the QM? I’m enjoying the narration more in this one.

It's the same narrator, T. Ryder Smith, for all three published audiobooks. Maybe he got better direction or understanding of the story.
