Memories for me too, Lizzy. Almost six years ago!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3639 comments I'm having a hard time deciding on my last couple votes this time.

Does anyone have any book suggestions for Wonders of the world, or Academic settings (college or grad school preferred)? I liked Transcendent Kingdom about a graduate student.

Environmental fiction is expected to be hot next year, and Liminality/transitions is about evolutionary change, which fits this topic nicely. (Plus I had "revolution" as a learning theme this year, so "evolution" is a good theme for next year.) Change is always accelerating, so I will always vote for a good change topic.

Bees won me over last time, so I hope it gets in now that I have 10 good books that fit! I like friendship and Beatles and a few more. I was swayed by the arguments/examples in favor of Twilight Zone, takes place within a year, and Firsts. With Wonders, hidden gems, isms, etc. I have too many upvotes, so I need to narrow it down.

I like libraries/bookstores, but like Nancy I decided to hold out for a broader variation of this idea.

Before the cover was too raw and painful to look at. Now it makes me feel even more uncomfortable. (Maybe this is why people keep their eyes closed during sex.)

For academic setting specifically college/grad school that I liked:
The Secret History
Libertie
If We Were Villains
A Tip for the Hangman
Educated - not the main focus but a good chunk
When Breath Becomes Air

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3639 comments Thanks Martha and Sam. Educated and When Breath Becomes Air are excellent. I haven't read The Secret History yet, and I'll check out the others. I wasn't thinking of Possession as being in an academic environment (it's not a classroom) but it definitely fits. I just discovered this author, and I really want to read more by her. Now I'd better vote before I forget. Thanks!

As far as books set in college, I love academic satires (having been a grad student myself). The following all have academic figures who are not particularly admirable.

Straight Man
Nice Work
Lucky Jim

I love Possession!

Chrissy | 1142 comments Changing Places is a great academic satire, and it has a sequel that I also enjoyed… they are older, from the 70s maybe?

Thanks, these all sound fun. It's a such a different world, it's easy to satirize it. Most are very mellow, but I used to know a department chair who was such a sleaze ball, he would have fit right in a murder mystery - as either victim or suspect.

Oh, I like Russo, and I remember a duck too! And Moo is very funny.

RachelG. The first thing I thought of for Academic setting is the Family Skeleton mystery series (A Skeleton in the Family is the first book). The protagonist is a adjunct college professor.

The Fox and I: An Uncommon Friendship would work for unlikely friendship.

Thomas Emily. Were you able to contact the read a thon winner in the end? i seem to rememebr you were having technical diffcluties there for a while

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Huh, I had no idea it used to be limited to 4 up/4 down. I only found this group at the end of 2019, and participated in the voting for the first time last year. There have been many times I've had only up so I would have hated to have been limited!

And on that note, I need to go vote!

Yes, Thomas, we were able to get through to Roxana, and her chosen prompt is on the Poll 15 results!
