Louie, around what year did you read this book?

Please note: you must add plot details to the header/ topic title. Just copy from what you've already written in the first comment. Requests with vague headers are closed because this group is so large. If you need help with this, just post a new comment.

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 241 comments Louie, I read a LOT of regencies; can you tell me anything about the Army Captain? Was he wounded? Was this after he left the army, or was he just home temporarily? Was the aunt deceased, or was he visiting her? Were they related, and if so, how?

What do you remember about the heroine? Was she young or older/a spinster? Did she have any siblings? How long had she been living with her grandmother?

Also, was this an old "classic" regency, like from Signet, or is this a more current "historical" set in the regency period?

Louie Halfacre | 9 comments I believe the Captain had recently sold out. His aunt was deceased and he was her heir. The heroine was a young girl around 20 yrs old and she had lived with her grandmother since her father who was the vicar died. She had no brothers or sisters. The current vicar was a younger man with no scruples at all. This was a recent novel set in the historical Regency era. I have also read hundreds of these Regency era books. Mary Balogh and Mary Kingswood are two of my favorite authors.

Brenna's suggestion of Adoring Abigail by Chalon Linton does sound like your book. Amazon.com has a "Look Inside" preview.

Some Goodreads reviewers say:
- "Captain now Mr. Robert Wilkins has inherited a grand estate from his great-aunt... As a second son who spent many years in the military he isn't prepared for such a responsibility. Arriving before his household expects him, he finds a young woman in the garden of Cattersley, and he's intrigued."
- "...romance between Robert, the master of Cattersley estate, and Abigail, a lovely young girl with a speech impairment, delightfully unfolds despite a duplicitous Vicar and a critical, domineering grandmother."
- "Abigail’s challenges include her grandmother who is embarrassed by her granddaughter’s speech impediment, and also her unrelenting insistence of the attentions of the local vicar. Afterall, her grandmother assumes that with such a speech defect, Abigail appears inept and could never find a suitable husband other than the vicar."
