If you could change one awful event in world history, but it might mean you would never have been born, would you do it?

Personally, no
Not because it might have prevented my birth, but because we learn from trial and error. As awful as that sounds...we see bad things happen and we can work towards fixing them or making sure they don't happen again.

It will in da future

Yes, if sacrificing my life would mean saving many more, then yes. If it doesn't change much, then I probably wouldn't because I would be throwing my life away for nothing.
If I had to choose to sacrifice my life in order to save everyone else's, I would. If I knew that the only thing to save the whole world from a catastrophic disaster was to sacrifice my existence, I would. I wouldn't be selfish by letting the world go into chaos knowing that I could've done something.
No, because within all bad there is also good. Of course these events come at the cost of many innocent lives but people also found love - or their grandkids did after their families fled the country. And later these events get used as a warning or even inspiration for beautiful stories. I feel like if we change a part of history it will just come to happen in a different time because it's a mistake humanity hasn't learned about yet.
It's hard because there's awful events like the Holocaust that I would definitely want to get rid of even if it meant I wouldn't have been born but messing with history can be a tricky subject. If you get rid of one event, it could create a ripple effect. Get rid of the Holocaust and maybe another attempted genocide occurs. Even getting rid of an event like a single person's untimely death could have disastrous effects. What if Anne Boleyn hadn't died? Her offspring could eventually be the next Hitler. We never know and for that reason I think it's safer for the world to keep history as it is even though some of history is awful and devastating.
I'd have to say no. The main reason is because there are too many awful things in history that I would want to change. Every time period has at least one horrible event that occurs. Are any of them truly better than the others? Are any of them truly worse, or are they as equally bad as the next? We have no way of knowing. History repeats itself, and not because history is this mysterious, guiding force, but because of human nature. There will always be humans who are cruel, selfish, and arrogant. They've existed since the beginning of time, and they won't go away. World War II and the Holocaust were horrible, but what about the Vietnam War, a war where men were drafted against their will, forced to fight in a war they had no choice to be in, and then return to America where they were treated badly for nothing? No. I wouldn't change anything, not because I'm heartless, but because what would it truly change? Awful things are done every day, and we may not even know about them.

What would you do in the Garden of Eden?
What would you do in the Garden of Eden?
It is not a simple question, because we have as many atrocities that have happened through the course of history, we have either learned from them or something good has come of them.also, from a Christian standpoint, at least, it would be wrong. we are putting ourselves in the place of God, saying we will change the course of history, without complete knowledge and understanding, and make it so that we never existed. As we know, God never does anything random, or makes a mistake.
No. Not because I'm selfish, but because I think we need history to learn from it. If I were to go back and prevent Hitler's birth Fascism would have happened anyway and maybe things would have been even worse!
Personally, I would. My father is an addict, and although this isn't some massive terrible thing to the whole world, it has made his life a living Erebus(idk if we can say h*ll so im saying Erebus which is greek underworld instead). I would figure out a way to stop him becoming an addict from happening and hopefully it would result in him not becoming the broken person he is today. Also I would hope that it didnt rewrite the time that I would've existed in but allowed another timeline where he could become someone without the guilt and shame of an addiction.
No I wouldn't and my sacrifice wouldn't guarantee that some horrible historical moments wouldn't happen anyway provoked by someone else

Sorry to be nitpicky, but the Greek underworld is Tartarus....

Well, actually, not to be nitpicky either, but Hades rules Erebus, the underworld, which is part of Gaea(i think?), whereas Tartarus is a whole seperate entity full of monsters....

I hate to say this, but... no. I would change a good event in history, though. The Industrial Revolution.
Hear me out, hear me out! Think about it. Guns. Bullets. Cannons. Nuclear power. So many things could have been prevented if the Industrial Revolution was never allowed to happen.

Technically the first firearm was invented in China between the 10-12 centuries (900-1100s) because the Chinese invented gunpowder. The first recorded use of a firearm was in 1364. However, automatic handguns were invented in 1892, about 50 years after the Industrial Revolution. The arquebus (look it up) was invented by Europeans in the 15th century (1400s). So guns were technically invented long before the Industrial Revolution as were cannons, which popped up in China as early as the 12th century, which is still about 700 years before the Industrial Revolution. The artillery cannon appeared in history in 1326. Indigenous peoples were being killed with guns over 100 years before the Industrial Revolution ever happened....
Bullets as we know them were invented 40 years after the Industrial Revolution. I wouldn't change the Industrial Revolution because these were the key events:
Mechanized textile production
Canal construction
Steam engine
Factory system
Iron production increase
None of those are explicitly weapon production. Nuclear power also developed separately from the Industrial Revolution because that was discovered by physicists studying radioactivity. Radiation was discovered somewhat about 20-40 years before the Industrial Revolution happened as well.

Honestly, I wouldn’t. Humankind has to learn from our mistakes. If I prevent something from happening, it very well might just happen in the future.
Imagine if you did change something and it made everything 10x worse....like the entire world would blame you
Honestly, I don't think I would change history. Some events were terrible and devastating, but like Kamryn said, we have to learn from our mistakes.
Gosh, talking about changing the past and how to fix it reminds of Avengers: Endgame
