Random likes from random people

For about two years, I have been getting random "likes" by random people on random activities that I do. For example, I add a book to my "Want to read" list and then I get a notification that someone "liked" that.

At first, it was obvious that the random liker was a spam account promoting some spam URL. But, lately, I have been getting random likes from seemingly legitimate accounts that I have nothing in common with. No mutual friends, no mutual books, no mutual interests. They don't appear to be promoting anything. They "like" when I update my reading progress. They like when I add a book to my "Want to read list," etc.

Who are these people and why are they liking my insignificant random activities?
