Alwynne, on the topic of Lara Feigel, have you read her Literature, Cinema and Politics 1930-1945: Reading Between the Frames? Reading the blurb, it sounds like an interesting way of approaching Woolf and Elizabeth Bowen.

No, but it sounds just my sort of book.

I've read The Bitter Taste of Victory, but a while ago now. I liked it a lot and the author, of course, wrote the wonderful The Love Charm of Bombs.

Wow, £69 on Amazon. Looks good though, if they ever republish or a second hand copy is found that's cheaper.

University of Edinburgh Press, Susan, so won't be republished but you can sometimes pick up academic monographs as cheap remainders in Gower Street Waterstones, Otherwise it'll be available in college libraries. I wouldn't necessarily read it cover to cover but am very interested to see what she has to say about Woolf and Bowen.

Added to my TBR with ringing endorsements from you and Alwynne. This cut from the blurb sealed the deal: 'Ernest Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn, Marlene Dietrich, George Orwell, Lee Miller, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Billy Wilder, and others undertook the challenge of reconfiguring German society.'

I liked that one too, raced through them both, keep meaning to revisit but so hard to fit in re-reading alongside everything else!
