The Poets' Wives question

I'm really enjoying this book. I'm just a little troubled by Park's use of the timeline. I don't understand why he moves backwards and forwards so much, I don't think it adds to the enjoyment of the story. What do you think? What do you think about author's playing around with the timelines?
