Wonder | 8 comments Hello, I didn't know where I could ask this question so I am making this Reading list.
I have a friend who doesn't really know much of English except probably the letters but he wants to learn. I told him that reading is the best way to go about but u don't know which book to suggest and start with first. He's in his mid 30s. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Makrand | 75 comments According to me, he should start with children's books, bedtime stories, so that he can build his vocabulary.
Maybe some comics will help, then he can start reading novels
I hope this helps

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments he should also listen to the audio version while reading . this way, his pronunciations will also improve .Since children's bed time takes will be really very basic and nowadays these are all horrible Disney mashups - my recommendation is to start with children's classics - Oliver twist, Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel, Maurice Sendak's Little Bear. these are absolutely brilliant. There's always Dr. Seuss like Lorax and the grinch. The Mr. Men and Little Miss series. All of these will really make his reading more proficient, his understanding of the language as well as using the using the vocabulary in verbal speech.
finally, it's really commendable that he wants improve his language skills at a layer stage in life. all the best to him.

plus, let him refer to word meanings as and whrn he reads... initially will be difficult, but later on it will help to build up vocabulary and speed, as well as interest in the story .

Ladybird series for children...hr will be able to ascend up the grades quicker than children and may develop vocabulary and reading skill easily.

Wonder | 8 comments Thank you very much for the recommendations Makrand, Leena and Em. I got him short stories by Sudha Murthy because I remembered reading them when I was a kid and really liking them, also because her stories are mostly based in India. Was it a good choice?
@Leena I will definitely tell him to listen to audiobooks while he drives.
@Em, yes, he has a dictionary in his phone now. Hopefully he uses it well.

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments yrs Sudha Murthy's Grandma tales . they are wonderful. personally, I believe Ladybird will be very kiddish. I remember National Geographic Kids is a great magazine. it will be hard maybe, but with all the other recommendations and your endeavours he could read it in a few months.
