What a sad, depressing book. My three star review:

Cort - Unbreakable - Felice Stevens- (New York)
This was probably my least favorite of the series. Not because it was a bad story in itself or a badly written story...it was that there was just so much turmoil, and sorrow, and conflict to wade through. Harlan, turns out to be more altruistic than predatory and that becomes the key to the entire story. Harlan has a past that is so incredibly devastating and heartbreaking in how he lost his job, his fortune his family...his entire life as he knew it. It came as such a shock to those of us that have read the other books. All the other books contained characters that were broken and tormented, but none like Harlan. What i did really like about the book was the way this author can take a totally unlikable character and make you end up caring about them...how she makes them vulnerable. Harlan was the bad guy in an earlier book making him very easy to dislike. When I saw he would be part of the couple in this story I wasn't sure how it would work out...how he could overcome his past. Harlan and Cort were men that had demons that needed to be dealt with. It took a while for me to get into this one. As always, I enjoyed seeing the characters from the previous books. Since I'm hung up this series, I am looking forward to learning James's story.

Precious And Grace – Alexander McCall Smith – 3***
Book # 17 in the hugely popular “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” series, has Mma Precious Ramotswe and her “co-director” Mma Grace Makutsi at loggerheads once again over updating office practices vs relying on tried and true methods. I love this series. I enjoy spending time with these people, though I rather missed Mr J L B Matekoni who barely appears in this episode. Mma Ramotswe can always be relied upon to consider carefully the underlying motives and various options for dealing with any problem. While Mma Makutsi is frequently the one to rush forward, perhaps jumping to the wrong conclusion, or arriving at the right answer but for the wrong reason!

Decent historical fiction, it left me wanting more depth to the story. My 3.5 star review:

I'm an outlier but this book had too many fantastical elements and too much telling vs showing for my tastes

This paranormal romantic suspense novel had a unique take on how vampires, werewolves, etc. came to earth.

This didn't quite work out as I had expected but it spotlights some important issues. 3.25 stars.

The Wedding Date – Jasmine Guillory – 3.5***
What a fun, fast romantic read. I loved that Alexa and Drew are professionals with time-consuming careers. Their path to Happily Ever After is complicated by their geographic distance, their own personal issues, and a few missteps common to many new relationships. But they approach all these obstacles as adults, which I found very refreshing!

A decent debut YA Fantasy but could have been a lot better. The fantasy part is outstanding. The writing, amateurish. 3.5 stars.

Malice In the Highlands – Graham Thomas – 3***
This is a police-procedural mystery with a likeable lead character. There are plenty of suspects, and a mishmash of clues and subplots to keep things interesting. I did not solve the case ahead of Powell and was happy to be surprised by how things turned out. A thoroughly satisfying mystery, and I would read more of this series.

It was a good enough story I just didn't like some of the characters or their actions.
