Sam Hill is born with ocular albinism, his eyes have red pupils. His mother says he is extraordinary and that is God's will, a phrase that she lives by. Sam's young life is rough, being the subject of bullying. He gets into Our Lady of Mercy school through the defiant efforts of his mother and ends up with 2 close friends who are also misfits in different ways. The story moves backs and forth between his young life and adulthood. Characters from early on reappear later in his life. Many scenes were very moving.

The religious thread is woven throughout. He often questions the devotion of his parents and the lack of results that he sees in life. This is definitely a story I will remember.
