With roughly 6 weeks to go till our next readathon it is time to start warming up again with some pre-readathon challenges.

We had a few challenges in the past that would be fun to revisit.
1. Around the World - for this challenge we'll try to visit as many countries as we can. Log the books you finish and the country/countries they are set in, and we'll see how much of the planet we can collectively read about in 6 weeks.

2. Abecedarian Authors - Let's see how long it takes us to check off all the letters of the alphabet by reading books whose authors names start with each letter (first or last name).

3. Fifty Nifty United States - Let's see how long it takes for us to read books set in all 50 US states. We'll cross off each state as it gets visited. For an extra bonus challenge I'll also include the Canadian provinces in this one.

4. Long laps - We'll do some long readathon warm-ups (laps, as opposed to sprints), ~2wks, 1 wk, 2 wks, and 1 wk, leading up to the actual readathon. These are great for working out how you like to log your reading, and work out nicely alongside our other challenges.

5. Bingo Boards - We'll have several bingo boards posted during our pre-readathon challenge weeks.

If you want to get involved as a volunteer, check out our website for more info and to sign up as a volunteer. Sign-ups for participating in the readathon are also coming soon.

I thought about doing that one as well this time, but we already have the Around the World game in this prechallenge, and there are a LOT of provinces/counties and similar subdivisions in the countries in Europe. I figure I'll toy with the idea a few more months and maybe try a Europe version of Challenge 3 in April, maybe with a longer pre-challenge time than just 6wks, too.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments It would be immensely helpful if messages could go out about activities happening in the group? I'm sure I'm not the only one that doesn't have ALL notifications of new posts for groups turned on so it's really nice to get a message because all members get the messages.

Good point. I usually forget about the message feature on Goodreads because for me it is awfully clunky to access, but it may be helpful for a lot of folks.

We only have one more day till the readathon officially begins. I am going to keep the Abecedarian, States, and Countries games going during the readathon, though I may not be tallying everyone's contributions till the day after the readathon. Counting is surprisingly hard sometimes when one is sleep deprived. :)

The Bingo boards are available as links here and in the Announcements section of facebook.

I'll be setting up the co-mod hourly discussion folder soon. We'll have the traditional hour-long sprints at hours 1, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24, and I'll post the topics for all those as well, Now is a great time to dust off your old readathon logs in the For the Blogless folder, or make one if you don't have one yet. Be sure to choose the For the Blogless folder for your readathon logs' folder when you make new ones.

Enjoy your last day of pre-readathon prep time, and we'll dive in bright and early (we start at 6am for my time zone) on Saturday with our first reading sprint of the readathon.
