In a bit more detail: narrated by main character, a (perhaps) 10yo girl. Starts in a school setting with a strange group of kids who can't control their urge to bite when smelling humans. The girl is an odd one out who can control her urges and has a consciousness. Something happens in the school and a small group (among them the girl, her human teacher and a human ex-military-turned-guard) has to escape and survive in a world full of, you guessed it, vampires or zombies, can't remember which. Spoiler: at the end (I think) both the teacher and the guard get bitten and infected, and the guard gives the girl his gun to end his (their?) life(s) before he (they) turns into a "monster". I have the feeling it ended in a sort of cliffhanger.

I may be totally off base here, but it's possible that the cover was orange or dark yellow...

Read this book sometime between 2009 and 2012 (but no idea about its publishing date).

I also have the feeling that the author was male.
