I listened to most of this on a long drive today. It is definitely wellSuited to audio format - the way the story is told to you is written like an oral tale.
I loved this! I was expecting something more straight-faced serious from the title, cover, and the back-of-the-book summary, but I found this so nimble and open-hearted, even when it was dealing with tough things.
I started this one right after it was picked for this month's read... I listened to it on audio, but didn't love it. I thought the narrator was good, but I got pretty bored with the story and found it hard to pay attention to... I didn't particularly care about the characters.I really liked the beginning, but for whatever reason I quickly lost interest.
I just started this after finishing She Who Became the Sun today, and I really loved the intro. Here's hoping that it continues to be enjoyable for me.
I listened to the audio book, I love Robin Miles and she delivered a stellar performance as always. Too bad you got bored Emmett! I actually had the opposite experience I wasn't sure how much I was going to like it at the beginning but with time it grew on me. I also went in not reading the summary so I had no idea what it was going to be about.
It reminded me of oral stories, like fables but more interesting, not sure if that makes sense. Like the ones I grew up with always seem to demonize or punish women, and that didn't happen here.
This is my second Karen Lord and I'm convinced she's a big romantic at heart. The other book I read was The Best of All Possible Worlds it was one of SFFBC botms but I can't remember what month or year 😂. Maybe try that one Emmett if you are still interested in Karen Lord, there is a lot more going on in that one, its more sci-fi but perhaps more romantic than this one.
Nicol, I also really liked the feeling of oral storytelling - I love this type of fantasy in general, and I thought Lord used it really well in this book. For me, the intro was a really good peek at what was to come in the rest of the book, and I enjoyed the whole thing.
I just got Best of All Possible Worlds from the library, and am considering starting that immediately (looks like it was BOTM back in January of this year).
