I would say that I read this book some time in the late 90s or early 2000s.

It was a slightly pulply book but a lot of fun to read.

Some of the things I remember:
The map had a road across it called the Salt Road.
They had, at some point, a city in a bottle.
There was some kind of pit or vault where powerful magic artifacts were locked but they were being taken out somehow.
Magic warped those who used it.

I have been trying to find this book for years so any help would be great!

The Wizards and the Warriors by Hugh Cook. Or possibly one of the others in the series; the first 5 are all set in the continent of Argan, which the Salt Road runs through.
