So this is the first story of this nook !
At first, I was actually gonna write about some scary stuff which happened to me, but that’s too long. So I’ll save it for another day.
So, this is not my story ! It’s actually some non-fictional story I read in my Hindi textbook few years back. Most of the stories in that book were boring, but I liked this one. So I wanted to share it with everybody !
So the story is named the right to sadness/grief (dukh ka adhikar), it can also be translated to Authority of sadness/grief. Both works in this context.
The story starts with the narrator witnessing a woman selling some melons on street while crying with grief. All the people on the street were keeping distance from her, and scolding her for selling the melons. As the narrator goes to check what’s happening, he’s stopped by someone.
It turns out that someone in the family of that woman died and she’s suppose to follow sootak (I don’t know much about this tradition, but I know you’re not suppose to visit their house or eat from them). So basically, our narrator was warned not to buy melon from the woman, as you’re not supposed to eat anything from her.
So narrator enquired more about this woman. He finds out that the son of this woman died from a snake bite, while he was harvesting the melons.
The woman was forced to sell the melons right after his funeral as she needs to earn. However, since she is supposed to be practicing sootak, nobody is willing to buy from her or get close to her. She kept crying loudly as the people kept scolding her for not following sootak.
So the narrator buys melons from her, while he compares her situation with another lady he knows.
He then tells us about a lady in his flat whose son also died. She was bedridden with grief for a whole month while the doctors tended after her. A lot of people visited and consoled her, while they sympathized with her. She was rich enough to not worry about her expenses or her future. Therefore, she could be in grief for a long time without any problems.
The narrator compares the two completely different experiences of the same situation. He then comes to the conclusion that we as a society are divided even to our basic emotions such as sadness. Even a simple right to sadness is denied to the poor.
I liked this story because of how well the author was able to show the contrast between poor and the rich. I never thought that even a simple emotion like grief could be a luxury.
Soooo…what do you think ? Do you agree with this author ?

That’s completely possible. I’ve read this in a Hindi textbook of all places.
This story is probably a bit popular.

i quite agree, although people say money doesn't equal happiness, the reality is that your life would be completely different based on your wealth

exactly!

Oh well…😅
You have some different idea about me, I guess ?

Hiiii
But unfortunately, this nook is already dead ☠️
Thanks a lot for trying though !!!

Aww..
I guess one last story before I officially declare this dead ?

So, there once lived a king who loved hunting tigers. Like, he used to specifically hunt them until the forest was clean of it.
One day, he gets his fortune told. The fortune teller tells him that he’ll be able to kill 99 tigers but the 100th tiger will kill him instead.
This terribly scares the king who immediately stops killing the tigers
His tiger count until now was 50.
But unfortunately he was too addicted and he really couldn’t stop, so he devices a plan. He will kill 100 tigers himself and cross that number, so he’ll be safe
To be continued, I’m not done yet !

He visits every forest in his kingdom and completely wipes off all the tigers.
Tiger count is now 80.
Of course, that’s not enough. So he sets out of his kingdom and kills all the tigers he can find.
Tiger count is now 99
Unfortunately, he can’t find anymore tigers because he has practically killed a lot of them and finding more tigers was hard.
He is now panicked because there is still one more tiger and this tiger is supposed to kill him.
He now explores all the forests with caution. Because this last tiger could cost his life.
He at last finds one tiger in the forest. And at the right timing because the tiger is at it’s old age and could die anytime.
The king nervously takes a shot and BANG !
The tiger falls to the ground.
The king is relieved, he can finally rest and sleep well at night. The cause of his supposed death is dead itself.
However, the hunters who were with the king were in doubt. They were very sure that the shot missed but they won’t tell the king that. They certainly don’t want to make him angry.
So, after the king left, they checked the tiger.
They were right, the tiger wasn’t dead. But rather it had fainted with shock.
They killed the tiger themself and kept this a secret.
To be continued

It was just a good coincidence that his grandson was born at this exact time. The king could finally celebrate in peace.
To celebrate both his 100th tiger kill and his grandson’s birthday at the same time, the king hires a artist to make a wooden tiger as a gift to his grandson.
However, the artist did a bad job of it and it was way too much of a bad quality.
The wooden tiger was quickly damaged by the grandson and was covered with sharp wooden edges.
The king examines the wooden tiger and gets his hand scraped in the process. There is a large wound in this hand which is quickly bandaged.
Unfortunately, the wound gets infected. Turns out the wood used for the wooden tiger was in fact very poisonous.
The infection quickly spreads through the king’s body and the doctors couldn’t heal him.
The king dies because of the infection caused by the wooden tiger.
Turns out the fortune teller was right. The king does kill 99 tigers but the 100th (wooden) tiger kills him instead.

Yes, I’ve read this story a long time and it’s still so memorable.
I like telling this story to everyone I meet
