Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments I always enjoy Woolf and this was no exception. I gave it 4 stars. The story follows the staging of a play at an English country estate, and the social interactions of the cold bullying family who own the estate. Using the play within a story structure it explores the farce of propriety that is pre-WWII English society (the setting is right before the official outbreak of the war). At one point in the play (which is disjointed episodes from different parts of English history), the actors even literally hold up mirrors to the audience.

While her personal diaries may have revealed her to be quite the classist snob herself, Woolf was none the less extremely talented at sending up the very set she was apart of.

Hannah | 6 comments @Amanda Dawn You put all of that in such a clear way! I think Woolf was incredibly good at observing the world around her and being honest about it.

Another enjoyable book by Woolf. I have yet to read anything by her I haven't liked, both on and off the list. The story takes place in the course of a day, and takes place in a house hosting the village pageant. The acts that took place in the pageant reflected double meanings. Published posthumously, this was Woolf's last book written prior to her death. There was a story mentioned in the book about a lady who drowned herself in a lake. Interesting that Woolf would soon do just that herself.
