The MC had a child (I think it was a child and not his wife) who was murdered and fluids (I think semen) were left on the body. The crime was unsolved.
A while later, he gets the child's clothes back from the police and a vial of semen is wrapped up in the middle of them by mistake. So the MC, who I guess was some kind of biologist, is able to clone the killer from the DNA, with the intent of raising the child to adulthood and then seeing what his first child's killer looked like so he can track him down.
I thought this was by Linwood Barclay, but my reading log says I only read one book by him and it doesn't fit the description....
