Because I've sent these instructions to a couple of members I thought I'd put this here in case anyone else wants to transfer their Goodreads books to LibraryThing!

1. Create a LibraryThing account - you just need an email and password.
2. Go to 'My Books' on Goodreads, scroll down and on the left it says 'Import/Export'. Click this.
3. At the top it says 'Export your library'. Click this and eventually (depending on the size of your library) a download with today's date and time on - it should read something like 'Goodreads_Library_21_8_27' (this is probably not 100% correct - not looking at my screen, but I've done this several times now).
4. Download the file! You might want to open it and rename it something you can remember in your 'Documents' folder.
5. Open LibraryThing - I keep both Goodreads and LibraryThing open on separate tabs when I'm doing this.
6. On the homepage it says 'Import books'. Click here!
7. It will take you to a different page - where it says 'Choose file', click this and upload the download you've just saved onto your computer. It will probably be in your 'Downloads' folder, unless you've renamed it and saved to 'Documents'. Then click 'Upload'.
8. The next page will give you lots of options, as it's your first time doing this I suggest you just keep these settings as they are for now.
9. After a while you should get a little yellow notification in the top right of the screen. This should hopefully tell you that your library has been imported. NOTE: Sometimes it struggles with e/audiobooks so you may need to add these manually - pretty easy, just go to 'Add Books' and search for the title!
10. You should be all set now!

To find your charts and graphs Cindy was talking about, return to the homepage and click 'Charts & Graphs'.

Booknblues | 12064 comments Thanks, Jenny. I have an account on LibraryThing but rarely use it. The graphs are way cool, so thought I might try to do it.

I'm pretty inept at this kind of thing.

LibraryCin | 11690 comments Thanks for posting this for everyone, Jenny.

I also posted this in the other conversation before seeing this, but I'll copy it here:

"And I know I (and one or two others) have mentioned it before), but if you get set up at LT, you might want to create a unique tag to add to all the books on your tbr (I use my initials). Once that is set up, you can do a "tagmash" to combine tags to see what's on your tbr.

It makes it super-easy to find books that will fit a certain tag. (Keeping in mind, of course, that for our annual games/challenges here, you'd need to confirm the tag exists here, as well, when it's required to be there for games played for points or prizes.) But it's an easy one for the monthly tags, anyway.

ETA: I am also LibraryCin there if anyone wants to find and "friend" me there."

LibraryCin | 11690 comments And for those who used to be on shelfari, I set up a "Shelfarians on LibraryThing" group over there, too.

Not a very active group now, but was much used when I first set it up.

There are threads where you might find shelfarians you once knew who went there instead of here. Also threads with "how tos" and tips and things, as well.

And the image for the group is a screenshot of the old shefari shelf... :-)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8414 comments Also, the staff at Library Thing is very helpful if you run into any snags importing your book list. There were many Shelfarians who asked for help and the staff really went out of their way to help.

I followed the instructions. Thank you so much, Jenny!

Would love advice on how to do the multiple tag searches (or set up my books to do that most efficiently).

Thank you so so much.

I replied to your message to me, but I'll find that and copy/paste that here, too, in case anyone else wants to try it out:

It's called a "tagmash" when you want to combine two tags in one search; anyone could have tagged them with the tags.

I don't know if you've added your initials to all your tbr; I have so I'll use it as the example to explain. My initials are csw.

So, I am looking for "friendship" to see what's on my tbr, in the main search box at the top right of the page, I just type in
friendship, csw

For me, I get this:
Works Search > friendship, csw 0 editions
No results.

But, we're not done! There is a menu on the left (in library catalogues, we call these filters or limits). I now see an option that says "Tags". Click that.

Then it tells me this:
"See a tagmash of friendship, csw. Tagmashes show the works that best represent two or more tags together."

The first part "See a tagmash of friendship, csw" is a link. Click it. That will bring back everything on LT where anyone has tagged a book with both tags (well, it could be two separate people doing the tagging).

(It seems like a lot of steps, but after you do it a few times, it's easy to remember.)

Hope that helps anyone else who wants to try. :-)

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments Ahhhhh, thank you!!! I knew I wasn’t doing it right. I don’t know if I would figure that out on my own. Look forward to trying it when I get back.

Thanks for posting it here! I was trying to figure it out by myself yesterday but never was even close to it) It's really helpful!

message 10: by Cora (new)

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments Another way to do it is just google librarything tagmash and it comes up (it may be two tags that you don't care about, but once you are on the page there is a spot to try another tagmash).

Oh cool!!! So far my tagmash effort has been unsuccessful. It doesn't seem to be picking up the tag I applied to all of my books (ABPom from GR). Maybe it takes some time to be recognized. I see the tag on my books, but when I search for it . . .nothing.

message 12: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11690 comments I know when you remove a tag it can take some time for it to disappear (using my initials in a tagmash, it does often come up with books I've recently read and have removed the tag from).

It is very possible it also takes time for the tag to appear in a tagmash. Unfortunately, I have no idea how much time. At least, I'm hopeful - if it doesn't work for friendship, those of you getting set up now will hopefully be able to get it to work next month.

LibraryCin | 11690 comments FYI, I've just asked in one of the LT groups about this:
https://www.librarything.com/topic/34...

Anyone who is on LT should be able to comment (if you'd like). You do not need to be a member of most groups on LT to comment on a thread. I think only the private groups.

There are a few ways to find that thread again. The way I most commonly go back to a thread I've commented on is via "Talk" (at the top of the page), then in the menu on the left, you can choose "Your posts" (that will be sticky next time you go to Talk).

That will show you all the LT threads you have commented on. Any unread comments after you have replied will be bolded with the number of unread replies.

message 14: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11690 comments There is a lot you can do on LT and a lot of pages and places and ways to do them. Everyone finds their favourite ways.

"Groups", of course, will show you all the groups you've either joined or follow. "Talk" shows you threads from many different groups and you decide in that left menu which threads you want to see in this list.

message 15: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11690 comments If anyone else is following along with that thread (another way, if you don't want to comment, is to "star" the thread... off the top of my head I can't recall where/how to do that, but I imagine it's not tricky. Then, when you go to Talk, there is an option in the left menu to look at your starred threads), a couple of people have replied.

I managed to confuse one person using "csw" as my example, which of course is easy enough to find, as I've been using it for years.

The second person suggested it has to do when indexing is done (this was my guess, but I wasn't sure how often that happened). They think it might only be every few months.

So, there might be a bit of a wait, depending a. if that person is correct, and b. when the next time is LT will be doing the indexing.

Sorry about that! Maybe just keep your tbr up to date there, keep adding your initials, and check back with each new PBT tag.

message 16: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11690 comments I also wanted to "warn" that there are far fewer people on LT than here. So, there are tags that may not be on books there that are on books here.

And, of course, if you need something to be tagged a minimum number of times here (which, of course, is not the case for the monthly tag), please do come back and double check the tags here, as well.

Just want to say sorry for not replying to this, but knew LibraryCin would do a better job at explaining how to tagmash (as she introduced me to it!) Also, when all this was being discussed, I was asleep as I'm in the UK - lol!

Karin | 9222 comments Perhaps I should do this, although it may lead to duplicates. I haven't been adding all of the books I've been adding here.

Goodreads does not have a way to combine tags in a search.

I think there is a way if your own book has the two tags, but this way on LT finds the two tags if anyone has tagged the book with either tag. GR does not do this.

Does that make sense?

message 21: by Peacejanz (new)

Peacejanz | 1015 comments Thanks, LibraryCin - this makes perfect sense. Since I don't do any contests/tags - I just read the books I want to read and post my review. I know that there are a lot of tags - whatever they are that direct readers to certain types of books or a set of books but I do not do that. Thank you so much. I am just going to ignore this tagging thing and keep on reading what I decide with no challenges. I even started this year with nothing in my goal for reading - then I ended up with 10 or something - I did not put a number in there. Don't know what hppened. And since 1976 (when I went to Korea as a Peace Corps Volunteer), I have kept my own paper list in a notebook - lots of loose leaf sheets. Sometimes I have to dig back a lot to find something but it works for me. English books were hard to get in Korea so we volunteers were always exhanging books that people sent us from home. That is what started the list making. It still works for me - even if it takes me a long time to find something i read - I know the approximate year, then start reading through the list of books I was reading at the time. Thank you so much for explaning this. Too late for me now - I am 80 this year. Sometimes you can not teach old dogs new tricks. Thank you. peace, janz

Robin P | 5750 comments Peacejanz, you have 10 years on me but I always hope I will turn out like you. You have such a great attitude to everything. I only started using tags for this group, I never use them for my own purposes, except to show if I read something or if I own it, and where to find it such as kindle or audible. If I have already read the book, I don't need to know the tag. If I haven't read it yet, either the tag is obvious (a book called Lunch in Paris is tagged France and food) or they are a total surprise. I wouldn't have know to tag the mystery Clark and Division, which is set in Chicago, as Japan, which it turned out to be.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments Robin P -- Thank you so much. Your comments made my day. I hope you do not have all my aches and pains but I wish you only good vibes to continue living and reading. And teaching others, children, oldsters, as someone wiser than me said, "Keep on keeping on."
But your comment made me think of something - as I have aged, I care less about some things - e.g., college sports, highly rated books,. and more about others - e.g., learning more about empathy, death with dignity, etc. Thank you for your message today. So many things are wrong, need repair but our spirits are just fine. peace to you and the world, janz
