I believe The Fifth Wave trilogy by Rick Yancey would be a great starting block. I was absolutely obsessed with those novels as a teenager because it allowed my imagination to run wild. Another reason it was also easy for me to consume is because there wasn’t a lot of tricky vocabulary to worry about. This meant a lot to me at the time because I was spending majority of my time in the hospital for surgeries at that age, so I definitely recommend considering the circumstances!
My late wife used to teach older kids with reading difficulties. One thing to remember is any reading is good as long as the person is interested in the subject/story.
Motor sport is often popular with young blokes - plenty of magazines and some good films which are based on books.
Not all books with pictures are childish - an example would be the Asterix ones.
Real life adventures, perhaps ? - round the world on a bike.
We are all different. What interests one person would bore the pants of another.
Rick Riordan writes lots of books for younger reading groups, his Percy Jackson series is fantastic and Rick Riodan has a “Rick Riordan Presents” world of books that are from many different authors and mainly cover mythology from different places of the world, all for a sixth grade reading level.

I hope I can get some help here. I have the opportunity to help my nephew get his GED. Through years, of what can only be called neglect, he's dropped out of school. (It's a long story). An assessment has shown his reading level to be 6th grade. Most of the books at this reading level are of little interest to a 19 year old.
Any recommendations of books at this reading level that would be of interest to a more mature young man?
Thanks in advance!
