Yay, you're welcome! I liked this book so much I ordered a really expensive used copy after reading it from the library.
A group of researchers decides they're going to "Create" a ghost using "scientific" methods. They do deep research into the Revolutionary War, and compile historical info so that they can invent an identity of a murderer from that era. Then they hold seances to call that ghost into existence.
It works. When they go back into their research, they find that this person they invented is now mentioned in real historical documents, and even appears in paintings from that time.
Members of the research team start dying in mysterious ways. They realize that the ghost they invented needs to kill all the researchers who know he's "fictional" so that he can remain an actual ghost.
